Robbie Coltrane, who played the beloved character of ‘Hagrid’ in the Harry Potter franchise, died earlier on Friday at 72. Other iconic films of Robbie include heist films Ocean’s Twelve and Italian Job, Van Helsing, and James Bond franchise films Golden Eye and The World is Not Enough. Following his passing, Harry Potter franchise stars Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Felton and others paid their tributes.

In his statement, Daniel Radcliffe who reprised the titular character of Harry Potter in the franchise, said, “I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

Tom Felton, who brought the character of Draco Malfoy on the screen also paid his tributes and stated, “He was a big friendly giant on screen but even more so In real life. Love you mate – thank you for everything xx.”

J.K. Rowling, the author of best-selling Harry Potter books, also took to Twitter and shared picture of her hands held with Robbie. She captioned the picture with, “I send my love and deepest condolences to his family, above all his children.”

After his passing, his quote from Harry Potter’s reunion special went viral on social media, where he had said, “My children’s generation will show them to their children, so you could be watching it in 50 years time, easy. I’ll not be here, sadly, but Hagrid will.”

The actor’s passing was confirmed by his agent Belinda Wright. Robbie reportedly died in a hospital in Falkirk, Scotland. While his cause of death is still unknown, he had been suffering from ailments since a while.

Coltrane was battling against osteoarthritis, a disease well known for its horrific impact on joints. In an interview, Coltrane recalled how suffering with osteoarthritis were his worst moments where he was in “constant pain”. The actor also underwent a knee replacement earlier.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played the leading character of Harry Potter, issued a statement where he said – “I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

Matthew Lewis, who played the character of Neville, took to Twitter, and said, “Robbie. Bobser. He called me Space Boy. We shared a love of the final frontier. He didn’t give a f— and it always made you smile. A giant, in more ways than one. We had some times.”
