Robbie Coltrane, who played the beloved character of ‘Hagrid’ in the Harry Potter franchise, died earlier on Friday at 72. Other iconic films of Robbie include heist films Ocean’s Twelve and Italian Job, Van Helsing, and James Bond franchise films Golden Eye and The World is Not Enough. Following his passing, Harry Potter franchise stars Daniel Radcliffe, Tom Felton and others paid their tributes.

In his statement, Daniel Radcliffe who reprised the titular character of Harry Potter in the franchise, said, “I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

Tom Felton, who brought the character of Draco Malfoy on the screen also paid his tributes and stated, “He was a big friendly giant on screen but even more so In real life. Love you mate – thank you for everything xx.”

J.K. Rowling, the author of best-selling Harry Potter books, also took to Twitter and shared picture of her hands held with Robbie. She captioned the picture with, “I send my love and deepest condolences to his family, above all his children.”

Robbie Coltrane, is known for playing the role of Hagrid in all Harry Potter films. His portrayal of a giant earned plaudits and adoration from fans and critics.

Robbie Coltrane, the Scottish actor known for playing the beloved character of Hagrid in Harry Potter franchise, passed away earlier on Friday. He was 72 when he breathed his last.

After his passing, his quote from Harry Potter’s reunion special went viral on social media, where he had said, “My children’s generation will show them to their children, so you could be watching it in 50 years time, easy. I’ll not be here, sadly, but Hagrid will.”

“Constant Pain”: Robbie’s Last Years

The actor’s passing was confirmed by his agent Belinda Wright. Robbie reportedly died in a hospital in Falkirk, Scotland. While his cause of death is still unknown, he had been suffering from ailments since a while.

Coltrane was battling against osteoarthritis, a disease well known for its horrific impact on joints. In an interview, Coltrane recalled how suffering with osteoarthritis were his worst moments where he was in “constant pain”. The actor also underwent a knee replacement earlier.

Harry Potter Cast Pays Tribute

Following his death, the cast of Harry Potter franchise issued statements, paying tributes to their favourite gentle giant and condoling the demise.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played the leading character of Harry Potter, issued a statement where he said – “I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

Matthew Lewis, who played the character of Neville, took to Twitter, and said, “Robbie. Bobser. He called me Space Boy. We shared a love of the final frontier. He didn’t give a f— and it always made you smile. A giant, in more ways than one. We had some times.”

Netizens on Twitter also condoled Robbie’s demise and remembered him for immortalizing the character of Hagrid.

While Hagrid will surely be remembered for playing the character of Hagrid, owing to the popularity of the Harry Potter franchise, there are other iconic films where Robbie played crucial roles. He played the role of Matsui in Ocean’s Twelve. His character was an eccentric associate of Danny Ocean.

Prior to his stint with the Harry Potter franchise, Robbie was in another iconic film franchise – the James Bond movies. He played the role of Valentin Zukovsky, a tall and burly crime boss who then becomes an associate of James Bond.
