In a bizarre case reported from Uttarakhand, an elderly couple has sued their son and daughter-in-law in demand of a grandchild. While parents often go to lengths to convince their children in giving them a grandchild, the Uttarakhand couple has stooped to new levels altogether.
In the news agency ANI, the father of the now sued son, S.R. Prasad, was quoted saying, “They were wedded in 2016 in hopes of having grandchildren. We didn’t care about gender, just wanted a grandchild”. The couple has now one year of time to give the elderly parents a child, or they would need to pay a compensation of Rs. 2.5 crores each.
In his interview to ANI, S.R. Prasad also added that he got his son trained in America and hence his money was spent on that particular endeavor, and now, he is in financial distress.
He added that there was also a loan taken from the bank for the construction of home. “We’re troubled financially and personally. We demanded Rs. 2.5 crores each from both my son and daughter-in-law in our petition”, he further added. Meanwhile, the couple’s lawyer, A.K. Srivastava, has defended the case and said how children owe their parents basic financial care.
The Facts of the Matter
For decades, and even centuries, parents getting involved in their children’s adult lives has been normalized in India. So much so that parents taking the liberty of demanding grandchildren is concerningly common. Meanwhile, an Uttarakhand couple recently broke all precedents and went on to sue their son and daughter-in-law. They are now demanding a child, or Rs. 5 crores as a “compensation”.
Mother Claims Daughter-in-Law “Stole” her Son
Along with the couple, the parents and brothers of the daughter-in-law have also been mentioned as parties in the suit. According to the suit, the daughter-in-law “stole” the son of Sadhna Prasad.
The son is currently serving as a pilot. In an interview to ANI, the son’s father, S.R. Prasad was also quoted saying. “They were wedded in 2016 in hopes of having grandchildren. We didn’t care about gender, just wanted a grandchild.”
Couple Were Sent to Thailand for Honeymoon
As per a Bar and Bench report, the suit reads – “After marriage, with great hope and faith, the opposite parties were sent to Thailand for honeymoon”. In the court, the son’s mother also submitted that she gave the couple Rs. 5 lakhs to spend for honeymoon and added that Rs. 2 crores were nearly spent in taking care of the son.
Couple Was Given Audi A6 Worth Rs 65 Lakhs
The Rs. 2 crores sum was broken down in the plaintiff’s plea. A Rs. 35 lakhs in fees was paid for the son’s flying training in USA. A Rs. 20 lakhs was spent for the cost of living in USA. Further, the couple who are suing their son and daughter-in-law also spent Rs. 65 lakhs to buy an Audi A6 on a Punjab National Bank loan, for the happiness of the couple.
Following the couple’s marriage, the elderly couple insisted them to bear a grandchild. However, in the plea it was claimed that this was when the son and daughter-in-law “put a façade of being separated’, as per a Bar and Bench report.
Mother Claims “Suffering from Harassment & Mental Pain”
As per the plea, the couple is suffering from mental pain. The mother, who filed the plea, is suffering from “harassment for being deprived of a grandchild”, the suit plea mentions.
“That after the date of marriage dated December 9, 2016 till May 6, 2022, even after many years has elapsed, the plaintiff has been deprived of the happiness of the grandson and granddaughter,” the plea read.
Plaintiff’s Lawyer Defends the Demand
While netizens have been outraged due to the matter, the elderly couple’s lawyers have come in the couple’s defense. The plaintiff’s lawyer, A.K. Srivastava, was quoted in reports saying, “We invest in our children, make them capable of working in good firms. Children owe their parents basic financial care. The parents have demanded either a grandchild within a year or compensation of ₹ 5 crores”
