In a concerning development, Section 144 was imposed in Jharkhand’s Dumka after a class 12 girl student was reportedly set to fire over refusing her stalker’s proposal. The girl, who had suffered over 90% burns, succumbed to her injuries earlier on Sunday, August 28.

Following the incident, and the eventual demise of the victim, protests are being witnessed in Jharkhand, triggering authorities to impose Section 144. The accused in the matter was identified as 19-year-old Shahrukh Hussain.

According to reports, the 19-ear-old accused had been stalking and harassing the victim for “some time”. Earlier on August 23, when the victim was sleeping by the window of her residence, the accused poured inflammable liquid through her window and set her on fire. Further, the accused also threw liquid inside the victim’s room so that she could be trapped inside the room and couldn’t escape.

Reportedly, the accused had called the victim around 10 days back before the incident and forced her into being his friend. On August 22, he had called her again and threatened her to kill her if she did not talk to him.

Her eventual demise has triggered protests by various factions of Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, following which Section 144 was imposed.

The Facts of the Matter

The 19-year-old girl, who was reportedly set on fire for turning down her jilted stalker’s proposal, succumbed to her injuries earlier on Sunday.

The incident was reported from Dumka, Jharkhand. Following the news of her demise, widespread protests against the accused were witnessed in the district. To maintain the law and order situation of the district, the administration imposed the Section 144 of the CrPC, prohibiting gathering of four or more people.

How the Accused Trapped Victim

The victim, a class 12 student, was rushed to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital with 90% burn injuries. She was then referred to Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Science for further treatment. On the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the victim succumbed to her injuries.

On August 23, the accused threw an inflammable liquid into her room and burned the room’s curtains. The police added that the accused threw the same liquid inside the room, to make sure that the victim couldn’t escape. Eventually, her family doused the fire and took her to the hospital.

Victim’s Heartbreaking Statement

After being admitted to the hospital, the victim gave a statement to the police which was quoted in an Indian Express report. “On Tuesday morning, I experienced a sensation of pain on my back and could smell something burning. I found him running away when I opened my eyes. I started screaming in pain and went to my father’s room. My parents doused the fire and took me to the hospital,” the victim’s statement read.

Accused had Been Stalking Victim for Some Time

The accused, 19-year-old, Shahrukh Hussain, had been stalking and harassing the victim for quite some time, the police said. As per the victim’s account, Shahrukh had called her 10 days before the incident, and forced her into being his friend.

On August 22, the accused called her again and threatened that he will kill her if she didn’t talk to him. When the victim, told her father, he assured that he will speak to the man’s family on August 23.

Sec 144 Imposed after Widespread Protest

Following protests launched by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, the District administration imposed the Section 144 in the area. “Without any prior permission all public gathering including protests, religious processions is restricted,” Dumka Sub-Divisional Officer Maheshwar Mahato said.
