The Nawab of Najafgarh Virendra Sehwag blasted an 80 run knock off 35 balls as India Legends defeated Bangladesh Legends by 10 wickets in the Road Safety World Series. Batting as if he never took retirement, Viru smashed blasted 10 fours and 4 sixes and remained unbeaten with a jaw-dropping strike rate of 228.57. Meanwhile, Indian master blaster and captain of Indian Legends Sachin Tendulkar made a steady 33 runs off 26 deliveries.
The Road Safety World Series is a T20 tournament organized by the Road Safety Cell, Maharashtra to raise awareness about road safety. The series will feature notable legendary retired players from India, England, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Bangladesh and West Indies. The tournament resumed on Friday this week after the year-long forced hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
India Legends VS Bangladesh Legends Highlights
The Bangladesh Legends, batted first after they won the toss. But that was their only victory in the match as they were bowled out at a modest 109 in 19.4 overs. With a paltry sum of 109 as the target, Virendra Sehwag got his team India Legends off to an aggressive start and ended up making his half-century in just 23 deliveries.
Taking the Indian cricket fans back in time, Sehwag was being his attacking self since the first delivery. Sehwag showed his form and intention in the first over bowled by left-arm spinner Mohammed Rafique when he made 19 runs. Hitting the first two balls safely to the boundary for fours, Sehwag slammed the third for a maximum. The fifth ball was also sent to the boundary for a four as India legends cruised towards the target.
The bowlers saw no respite from Sehwag’s annihilation as he hit a four and a six in the second over. Soon, Sachin Tendulkar soon joined the party and hit Alamgir Kabir for two fours. As if the flood gates were opened, the runs kept flowing with the same pace and soon Sehwag reached his half-century. The former Indian opener reached his fifty in style, dispatching Kabir’s delivery for a six. By the end of the first powerplay, India Legends was cruising at 74 without a wicket.
Sehwag continued his attack and whacked Khaled Mahmud for a couple of fours and hitting a six off a slower ball by Mahmud taking India legends close to the victory. Viru finished the match in style and hit Mahmud for a six in the first ball of the eleventh over.
Earlier, Bangladesh Legends won the toss and chose to bat first. The team got off to a slow start with Nazimuddin and Javed Omar stitched 59 runs for the opening partnership. The partnership was torn in the 8th over of the inning when former Indian off-spinner Pragyan Ojha deceived Javed Omar and had him stumped for 12 runs. After the first wicket, India Legends did not let their opponent gain a footing and slowly but painfully Bangladesh Legends disintegrated. Nazimuddin was the only batsman looking good and was steady at 49 runs when he was bowled out by 2011-ODI-World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh.
Other than Nazimuddin, only Rajin Saleh was able to score in double figures for Bangladesh Legends. From a steady 68 runs for just 1 wicket, Bangladesh Legends were sent to the pavilion at 109 runs
For India Legends, both Irfan and Yusuf Pathan played their part in the disintegration of their opponent. Soon, Pragyan Ojha, Yuvraj Singh and even Manpreet Gony joined the party and added woes to the Bangladesh Legends side. In the end, Vinay Kumar ended things and cleaned up the wicket of Alamgir Kabir. Yusuf Pathan, Manpreet Gony claimed one wicket while Pragyan Ojha, Yuvraj Singh and Kumar claimed two each.
