Amid the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested recently in Sydney for rape charges. According to reports, the Sri Lankan cricket team left Australia without Danushka after playing its last group stage game against England, which the latter won by 4 wickets. In the wee hours of Sunday, Danushka was taken to the Sydney City police station after an investigation was conducted regarding the sexual assault of a woman.

Press Trust of India quoted a source familiar with the matter saying, “Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested for an alleged rape. The Sri Lankan team has left Australia without him.” Further, the New South Wales police in its website also elaborated on the matter, without mentioning Danushka’s name.

“Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week,” the report on the website read. As per the report, a 29-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Australia’s Rose Bay on November 2.

Reportedly, Danushka had been in touch with the victim for days via online dating application, and sexually assaulted her on the evening of November 2. An aggressive batsman and occasional bowler, Danushka was part of the Sri Lankan team that was recently eliminated from the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

The Facts of the Matter

On Saturday, November 5, Sri Lankan cricket team played its final game of the group stage against England. England defeated Sri Lanka by 4 wickets, giving Sri Lankan fans another reason to be dismayed. Amid the team’s loss, another shocking development emerged from Australia where Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested for rape charges in Sydney.

Sri Lankan Team Flew Without Danushka

According to reports, the 31-year-old batter was taken to the Sydney City police station earlier in the wee hours of Sunday while his team flew back without him after playing the last game. A PTI report quoted a source familiar with the matter saying, “Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested for an alleged rape. The Sri Lankan team has left Australia without him.”

NSW Police Gives Account of Incident

As per news shared by New South Wales police, Danushka allegedly sexually assaulted a 29-year-old woman. In its update, the NSW police did not mention Danushka’s name, but addressed him as a “Sri Lankan national”.

“Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Sydney’s east last week,” the report read.

Danushka was Talking to Victim Over Dating App

The arrest came after a joint investigation was conducted by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command after a 29-year-old woman alleged being sexually assaulted.

Reportedly, the 31-year-old Sri Lankan had been in touch with the victim for several days via a dating application. On November 2, 2022, the 29-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the evening at a residence at Rose Bay.

Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested and taken to the Sydney City police station after being charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. He was refused bail as well.

Nepal Captain Sandeep Lamichhane Arrested for Raping Minor

Earlier this September, Nepal cricket team captain and Delhi Capitals player Sandeep Lamichhane was accused of raping a minor. In October Sandeep was arrested and taken into custody after he landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

In a telephone conversation with officials of Cricket Association of Nepal, Sandeep had denied all the charges, and maintained being innocent.
