In concerning development regarding Srinagar Attacks, a gol-gappa vendor from Bihar was killed, making it 8th of such targeted deaths. The deceased was a non-native of Srinagar and resided originally in Bihar. The 8th victim in the slew of attacks was attacked on Saturday in Idgah region in Srinagar. It should be noted that this is the same region where another street-hawker named Virendra Paswan was killed earlier this month.

Background

The valley of Jammu & Kashmir is known for its enduring beauty while it endures attacks. The disputed region has seen hundreds of citizens killed by militants over the course of years. This year, Srinagar’s airport was rocked by drone explosion in the first of its kind attack. A special police officer was killed by LeT member along with his wife and daughter.

This month, a spate of killings has been witnessed in Srinagar, raising an alarm on the security situation.

The Facts of the Matter

A street-vendor was shot dead by unknown assailants in Srinagar this Saturday, adding to the spate of targeted attacks on civilians in the valley. The vendor has been identified as Arbind Kumar who was originally from Bihar and worked in Srinagar. Arbind was attacked on Saturday, 6.40 PM. After the attack, he was rushed to the government hospital, where he was declared dead.

“Civilian Targeted”: CM Abdullah Condoles the Death of Arbind Kumar

An NDTV report quoted Srinagar senior police officer, Vijay Kumar, saying, “A non-local vendor, Arbind Kumar Sah, was killed by terrorists in Eidgah area of Srinagar.” After the attack, J&K Chief Minister condoled the death of Arbind. Taking to Twitter, CM Abdullah wrote, “Strongly condemn the killing of street vendor Arvind Kumar in a terror attack in Srinagar today. This is yet another case of a civilian being targeted like this. All Arvind Kumar did was come to Srinagar in search of earning opportunities & it’s reprehensible that he was murdered.”

Similarly, leader of People’s Conference, Sajid Lone condoled the death and called the attack cowardly. “This is pure terror. Yet again a non-local vendor shot and killed in Idgah. What a shame. How cowardly can it get.”

Jammu Kashmir People’s Conference took to Twitter and wrote, “We unequivocally condemn the gruesome militant attack on non-locals in Srinagar & Pulwama today. Heartfelt condolences & sympathies with their families.”

Panic Among Hindu Communities in Kashmir

The recent attacks on non-native Kashmiris have led to a significant amount of terror and panic among members of their communities. In the eight deaths that have been recorded so far, 5 deaths were of persons that belonged to non-Muslim background. This has led to the media labelling the attacks as “targeted” ones.

Who Have Been Targeted in the Srinagar Attacks?

It should be noted that earlier last week, an attack was launched at a government high school in which the principal and teacher of the school were killed. Both the teacher and the principal were shot inside the premises. The teacher was Deepak Chand and the school principal was Satinder Kaur. The attack’s responsibility was taken by the Resistant Front who claimed that the teachers were assassinated as an Independence Day function was held in the school earlier on August 15.

Before the attacks on the school principal and teacher, 3 more persons were killed in Srinagar on October 5. The 3 victims were a street vendor, a prominent pharmacy owner and another civilian. The pharmacy owner was Makhan Lal Bindroo, a Kashmiri Pandit, the street vendor was originally from Bihar.
