In a heartbreaking incident reported from Rajasthan, a pack of stray dogs mauled and killed a 28-days-old infant sleeping next to his mother at a government hospital in Sirohi district. According to reports, the dogs attacked the month-old baby when he was sleeping next to his mother as the infant’s father was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

According to reports, the father, Mahendra Meena, 40, was undergoing treatment for silicosis in the TB & chest ward of the hospital. The dogs dragged the infant away, and his mutilated body was later found near a water tank outside the ward. Sirohi district collector Dr Bhanwar Lal suspended nursing officer Suresh Meena for negligence of duty.

The infant’s father narrated that he was awake until midnight, and his wife was feeding the infant. They slept soon after, and sometime between 1 am and 2 am, Rekha, the mother, woke up to find their son missing.

A frantic search was initiated, and the family and staff heard dogs barking outside the ward. Rushing out to find the infant, they saw a pack of dogs tearing and ripping the infant. The dogs had almost devoured the infant’s stomach and one hand completely, and despite chasing them away, the baby was already dead and his body severely mutilated.

Infuriated locals have since staged protest against the hospital staff.

The Facts of the Matter

A tragic incident has shaken and stirred the sleepy town of Rajasthan’s Sirohi , where a one-month-old (28-day-old) infant was mauled to death by stray dogs while sleeping with his mother and two siblings on the floor beside his father’s bed at a government hospital.

The father, Mahendra Meena, 40, was undergoing treatment for silicosis at the TB & chest ward of the hospital.

Dog Entered Hospital’s Ward

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday when the dogs dragged the infant away, and his mutilated body was found near a water tank outside the ward. The hospital’s CCTV cameras failed to capture the incident, and a probe has been ordered to ascertain how the pack of dogs found its way into the ward.

Compensation Demanded for the Bereaved Family

The bereaved family and the infuriated residents of the city blamed the death on the negligence of the hospital administration. BJP functionaries and workers, led by the party’s district president Narayan Purohit, demonstrated at the hospital and submitted a memorandum to the ADM for the chief minister, demanding suitable compensation for the family and strict action against erring hospital staff.

Wife Finds Infant Missing, Search Ensues

According to Mahendra Meena, he and his wife were awake until midnight on Monday, and his wife was feeding the infant. Then they all slept, and sometime between 1 am and 2 am, his wife woke up to find their month-old son missing. She raised an alarm, and a frantic search was initiated.

On hearing the barking dogs, the family and staff rushed out of the ward to find the infant being ripped apart by the canines.

Postmortem Conducted, Probe Ordered

The remains of the baby were collected, and an autopsy was conducted by a medical board in the morning, followed by cremation. In the immediate aftermath, the acting chief medical officer Virendra Mahatma assured that an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the lapse that led to this unfortunate incident, a TOI report stated.

Nursing officer Suresh Meena has been suspended with immediate effect for negligence of duty following the incident, and the services of guard Bhavani Singh and ward boy Ujjwal Devasi have been terminated.
