In 2016, two persons came in the spotlight after they cracked the union public service commission (UPSC) exams with flying colours. The two persons were Tina Dabi and Athar Khan – both of whom topped the IAS entrance examination.

Tina’s achievement was larger in the context of community progress as she became the first dalit person to top the UPSC exam and Athar Khan, who hailed from Kashmir, came right behind her and secured the second position. Athar’s brilliant performance in the exam too was looked as the dream story of a young Kashmiri youth breaking into the administrative landscape.

Currently, both Dabi and Khan are IAS officers who belong do the Rajasthan cadre. While both were posted in Jaipur, Tina later was moved to Sri Ganganagar’s Zila Parishad as the Chief Executive Officer. Jab Tina Dabi Met Athar Khan

The future administrative mavericks first met at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy for Administration in Mussoorie in 2016. Both were undergoing the IAS training and amid the beautiful Mussoorie landscape, the couple’s love for each other blossomed over the course of their training.

Dabi was quoted in reports saying-

“We met in the morning and by evening Aamir was at my door. Uske liye pehli nazar mein pyaar ho gaya (For him, he fell in love with me at the first sight).”

The ‘Love-Jihad’ Controversy Erupts

After the announcement of their relationship, the public and the family of both the partners were supportive of their relationship. But Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha, India’s right-wing outfit showed their issues publicly.

Soon, the couple’s relationship was termed as ‘love-jihad’, a term now popularized by the right-wing outfits which claim that Muslim men lure Hindu women and force them into conversion after their marriage.

Apparently, this didn’t dampen Tina and Athar’s relationship and Tina at one point was quoted saying-

“It is just that 5 per cent. The majority are very happy. You would have seen in my Facebook timeline that most of the comments are encouraging. In fact, I am overwhelmed by the support and congratulatory messages.”

The Big Fat Indian Wedding

Amid all the encouragement and controversy, the couple decided to get married on April 7, 2018, two years after they made their relationship public. The couple got married under the lush Pahalgam sun with picturesque surroundings. The wedding became a high-profile affair as it attracted several senior diplomats, politicians and other dignitaries. As the couple were IAS toppers – their wedding was attended by Indian Vice President, Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu.

The controversy continued with several right-wing fringe groups protesting against the union, and so did the encouragement of people on the other side of spectrum.

Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi himself took to Twitter and claimed that the couple’s union was an “inspiration” in the day and time where “growing intolerance and communal hatred” was on rise.

The Cracks in the Union, the Eventual Divorce

All seemed fine in the power couple’s relationship during the time they got married. However, news reports of troubles between the couple started making the rounds of the internet soon after the marriage. The first major crack in the relationship was apparent in 2020 when Tina removed the last name ‘Khan’ from her social media accounts.

Meanwhile it was also reported that Athar had unfollowed Tina on Instagram. Soon, the speculations were confirmed when Dabi and Khan took to the Jaipur family court and sought a divorce citing mutual consent.
