North Macedonian authorities investigate after pyrotechnics ignite deadly blaze at overcrowded Pulse nightclub

Disaster Strikes During Late-Night Performance

In the early hours of Sunday morning, what began as a night of music and celebration turned into a scene of horror when a massive fire engulfed the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, eastern North Macedonia. The blaze, which erupted during a performance by popular hip-hop duo DNK, has claimed at least 59 lives and left more than 100 people injured.

Witnesses report that the venue was packed with approximately 1,500 attendees when the fire started around 3 a.m. local time. According to preliminary investigations, pyrotechnics used during the performance ignited highly flammable ceiling materials, causing flames to spread rapidly throughout the converted warehouse structure.

“The speed at which the fire moved gave many people little chance to react,” said one survivor who wished to remain anonymous. “Within minutes, the entire place was filled with thick, black smoke.”

Emergency Response and Medical Treatment

First responders arrived quickly to battle the flames and assist victims. Firefighters from Kocani and surrounding cities worked together to extinguish the blaze, while medical personnel tended to the injured.

The severity of the disaster has overwhelmed local healthcare facilities. Currently:

  • 27 people are receiving treatment for severe burns at Skopje City Hospital
  • 23 additional victims are under care at the Clinical Centre
  • Dozens more are being treated at local medical facilities for smoke inhalation and injuries sustained during evacuation attempts

Medical authorities have called for blood donations and additional support as they work to treat the high number of casualties.

Investigation and Accountability

In the aftermath of the tragedy, authorities have moved quickly to determine responsibility. The nightclub’s owner has been detained, and arrest warrants have been issued for four additional individuals connected to the incident.

North Macedonia’s Public Prosecutor, Ljupco Kocevski, confirmed that a team of five prosecutors is leading a thorough investigation. “We are meticulously collecting evidence and conducting interviews to understand exactly what happened and who bears responsibility,” Kocevski stated during a press conference.

Safety experts have raised concerns about the venue itself. The Pulse nightclub operated in a converted carpet warehouse that may not have met proper safety regulations for large public gatherings. Questions about emergency exits, fire suppression systems, and occupancy limits are central to the ongoing investigation.

National Mourning and Leadership Response

The disaster has plunged North Macedonia into mourning. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski addressed the nation, describing the event as “a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia.”

“Our government will provide every possible support to the victims and their families during this unimaginable time,” Mickoski pledged. “We will also ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”

President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova appeared visibly emotional during her public statement, offering condolences to the affected families and promising solidarity as the nation grieves.

International Reaction and Historical Context

The scale of the disaster has drawn international attention and offers of assistance. U.S. Ambassador to North Macedonia Angela Aggeler extended condolences and offered American support. Leaders from neighboring countries including Albania, as well as officials from Ukraine and the European Commission, have also expressed solidarity with North Macedonia during this difficult time.

This incident joins a tragic list of deadly nightclub fires worldwide. Similar disasters include the 2015 Bucharest fire that claimed 64 lives and the catastrophic 2013 blaze in Santa Maria, Brazil, where over 240 people perished. These events have historically led to reforms in fire safety regulations and enforcement.

Moving Forward

As investigations continue, attention is turning to prevention of future tragedies. Safety experts emphasize the importance of:

  • Proper building inspections and enforcement of safety codes
  • Adequate emergency exits and evacuation plans
  • Restrictions on pyrotechnics in enclosed spaces
  • Staff training for emergency situations

For now, the focus remains on supporting survivors and the families of victims as the community begins the difficult process of healing.
