In a tragic accident, 14 people were killed and 21 others grievously injured when an overloaded pickup truck ferrying them overturned near Badjar village in Dindori district late Wednesday night.

The Accident

The accident occurred around 1:30am when the speeding truck carrying over 30 passengers lost control and veered off the road, before toppling over into a ditch. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing screams and found the mangled remains of the vehicle.

“It was a horrifying scene. The truck was completely crushed and there were passengers trapped inside. We quickly got to work rescuing them,” said Mahesh, an eyewitness.

The deceased included 8 men, 3 women and 3 children. The injured were immediately rushed to the Shahpura Community Health Center by locals and police officials arriving at the scene later.

Returning from a Celebration

According to police reports, the pickup truck was ferrying a group of villagers back to Devari village from a ‘godh bharai’ (baby shower) function in Amhai Devri village. With the vehicle overloaded, the driver likely lost control while navigating a bend.

Chief Minister Announces Compensation

Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of ₹4 lakhs for the families of the deceased. He also instructed the Dindori district administration to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Cabinet Minister Visits Hospital

Cabinet Minister Sampatiya Uikey visited the Shahpura hospital to check on the condition of the injured and directed medical authorities to provide the best treatment possible. She also visited the site of the accident and promised a thorough investigation.

As Madhya Pradesh mourns yet another tragic road accident, questions are being raised about measures to prevent such accidents due to reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance. The police have registered a case and are investigating if the vehicle was speeding or had faulty parts leading to the accident.
