In a tragic incident, a forest department tourist guide was killed in an elephant attack on Tuesday morning while leading a group trek in Kerala’s Wayanad district. The deceased, 50-year-old Nelliyanikott Thankachan, was an experienced guide who worked with the eco-development committee under the state’s forest department.

Fatal Encounter With Wild Elephant During Trek

The attack occurred around 11:30 am near the Vellamunda forest station as Thankachan was guiding tourists to the popular Chirappullumala trekking site. According to reports, the group unexpectedly encountered a wild elephant on the forest path. As the animal charged at them, the tourists managed to flee but Thankachan was caught unawares and dragged about 10 meters before being fatally stamped upon.

Search Teams Recover Body, Elephant Retreats Into Forest

The incident came to light when some of the tourists rushed back and alerted the forest station. Despite search teams reaching the location quickly, the elephant had retreated deep into the forest. Thankachan’s body was later recovered during the search operations.

Shock and Grief Over Tragic Loss

The tragic loss of the experienced guide has left the forest department officials as well as the local community in shock. An investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the attack is underway. Authorities continue to warn tourists and residents to exercise caution in the area known to be inhabited by wild elephants.
