A devastating explosion rocked a firecracker factory near Deesa town in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on Tuesday, resulting in significant casualties and widespread destruction. The incident has prompted immediate rescue operations and investigations into the cause of the blast.

Incident Details

The explosion occurred in the morning hours at a firecracker manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Deesa. The powerful blast caused the building’s concrete slab to collapse, trapping numerous workers under the debris. The sudden catastrophe sent shockwaves through the surrounding community as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a thunderous sound that reverberated throughout the area, followed by plumes of smoke rising from the factory site. Local residents described the chaotic aftermath as emergency vehicles converged on the location.

Casualty Count and Rescue Efforts

Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the exact number of casualties. Initial assessments indicated seven fatalities, but later updates from authorities revised the toll to at least 18 deaths. Additionally, five individuals have been reported injured, with some in critical condition receiving treatment at nearby medical facilities.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was immediately deployed to the site, working alongside firefighters from the Deesa municipality. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to:

  • Control the blaze that erupted following the explosion
  • Remove debris to reach those trapped underneath
  • Transport injured survivors to hospitals
  • Secure the area to prevent further incidents

Many of the deceased have been identified as migrant workers from neighboring Madhya Pradesh who were employed at the facility. According to the list prepared by the administration and police, the victims include:

  • Guddi Bai (35), wife of Bhagwan Singh
  • Vijay (16), son of Bhagwan Singh
  • Ajay (15), son of Bhagwan Singh
  • Krishna (12), son of Bhagwan Singh
  • Rakesh (30), son of Babulal
  • Dali Bai (25), wife of Rakesh
  • Kiran (45), wife of Rakesh
  • Naina (3), daughter of Rakesh
  • Vishnu (22), son of Satyanarayan
  • Rakesh (23), son of Satyanarayan
  • Bittu (12), son of Satyanarayan
  • Suresh (26), son of Amar Singh
  • Babita (36), wife of Santosh
  • Dhanraj (18), son of Santosh
  • Sanjay (12), son of Santosh

All the above victims were residents of Handia Tehsil headquarters. Additionally, Vijay (23), son of Ramdin Kajwe, a resident of Malpoun village in Handisa Tehsil, was also among the deceased.
This tragic loss of life, which includes entire families and several children, has prompted swift responses from state leadership.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and pledged support for those affected from his state.

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Preliminary inquiries are focusing on whether the facility was being used for manufacturing firecrackers beyond its licensed storage purpose.
