A tragic stampede occurred outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, 2025, during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) first IPL title win. Reports indicate that at least 10 to 11 people died, with estimates of 16 to over 50 others injured, some critically, as thousands of fans gathered for a victory parade and felicitation event organized by the Karnataka state government. The chaos erupted near Gate No. 3 of the stadium, with one report citing a collapsed drain slab trapping over 50 people as a contributing factor. Injured individuals were rushed to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and Vaidehi Hospital, with some receiving CPR at the scene.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar apologized, describing the crowd as “uncontrollable” despite deploying over 5,000 police personnel, and noted the event was shortened due to the situation. The BJP criticized the Congress-led state government, alleging negligence and poor crowd management, with leaders like Amit Malviya and BY Vijayendra calling for accountability and a judicial inquiry. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was scheduled to address the incident in a press conference at 7:30 PM that day. The tragedy has sparked debates over administrative failures, with some arguing the event’s planning was inadequate for the massive turnout.
