A 72-year old tribal woman, Tulsi Gowda who is an environmentalist from Karnataka is honored with the Padma Shri award by the President of India. On Monday, 8th November she has been honored for the contribution she has made to the protection of the environment in her entire lifetime. President Ram Nath Kovind presented Tulsi Gowda with the Padma Shri award and congratulated her for her achievement on Twitter.

About Tulsi Gowda

Tulsi Gowda who was grown up in a poor Hakkali tribal family since 1944 is known as the ‘Encyclopedia of the Forest’. Even after facing poverty and lack of education, she achieved this title for herself. Gowda lives in Honnalli hamlet which is a transitional settlement between rural and urban in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. Tulsi has been awarded this title for her immense knowledge of different species of herbs and plants.

Tulsi Gowda’s Contribution to Environment

She has been helping the environment since the age of 12 and has given the past six decades of her life to the conservation of the environment. She came into recognition after she joined the forest department as a temporary volunteer. Seeing her dedication and passion for preserving nature, Gowda was offered a permanent job in the forest department. It is believed that she has planted nearly 1,00,000 in Karnataka itself. She also indulges in sharing her knowledge about the importance of conserving the environment with the people from the new generation. Her actions and contributions have also impacted her neighborhood places for a long-term impact. Even after her old age, Tulsi continues to work for the environment and nurture plants.

Tulsi Gowda Receiving Padma Shri

On 8th November, Monday Tulsi Gowda was presented with the Padma Shri by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. She was honored with India’s fourth-civilian award for planting more than 30,000 saplings and looking after the nurseries of the forest department. Tulsi was dressed in her traditional attire and was barefoot in the ceremony held in New Delhi where she received her award. Tulsi Gowda from Karnataka is one of the 119 Padma awardees for the year 2021. Ram Nath Kovind the President of India congratulated and wished Tulsi Gowda for her achievement on the occasion at Rashtrapati Bhawan and also tweeted from the Twitter handle of the President of India:

About Padma Awards 2021

In the year 2021, one hundred and nineteen Padma Awards were conferred by President Ram Nath Kovind. The list of Padma Awards 2021 contains 10 Padma Bhushan, 7 Padma Vibhushan, and 102 Padma Shri Awards. Out of 119, twenty-nine awardees, this year are women and only one is transgender. The awardees belong from various fields of art, science and engineering, industry and trade, social work, literature and education, civil service, medicine, sports, public affairs, and many others.
