The flight attendant hit him with a coffee pot in order to subdue him and soon the passengers in the flight came forward to intervene. According to reports, the unruly passenger was identified as Juan Remberto Rivas who was flying in American Airlines from Los Angeles to Washington D. C. Juan reportedly displayed “erratic behaviour”. He tried “breaking open a champagne bottle, and used a plastic butter-knife as a shank. The Facts of the Matter
While flight attendants are often seen serving food and drinks to fliers, they are the unsung heroes when a crisis like situation emerges during a flight. These unsung heroes have to handle medical emergencies, create a comfortable atmosphere during general emergencies, and take care of unruly and aggressive fliers.
Recently, a flight attendant on the American Airlines, flying from L.A. to Washington D.C. responded to a crisis-like situation when an unruly passenger displayed erratic behaviour, and tried opening the airplane’s exit door mid-flight. The flight-attendant applied quick thinking and slammed a coffee-pot to subdue the aggressive flier.

Flier Claimed That “People Were Trying to Get Him”
The unruly passenger was identified as Juan Remberto Rivas. On Sunday last week he was flying with the American Airlines. Rivas reportedly was relatively calm when he boarded the flight. However, mid-flight, he asked flight attendants to move him to the first class. He claimed that people were out there to get him and he didn’t trust anyone.
Unruly Flier Complains Plane Not Moving
After a while, he again complained to the attendants that the airplane wasn’t moving. The attendants asked Rivas to look outside the window to confirm that the plane was indeed flying. It was at that point that Rivas grabbed a bottle of champagne and tried to break it open. He also grabbed a plastic knife and held it like a shank.
Situation Escalates – Coffee Pot Makes Entry
The ordeal escalated when he tried pulling the exit door of the airplane to open him. To subdue him, a flight attendant grabbed a coffee pot and hit him twice on the hand. Another passenger, a police officer, pulled Rivas away from the exit-door.
A statement released by US district attorney read, “A passenger punched Rivas in the jaw and another passenger grabbed his neck and pulled him to the floor. Passengers and flight attendants restrained Rivas until they could secure his hands and feet with zip ties and duct tape.”
“We’re Grateful…”: American Airlines Releases Statement
After the incident, American Airlines also issued a statement which read, “American Airlines flight 1775 with service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Washington, D.C. (DCA) diverted to Kansas City (MCI) due to an unruly passenger.
The statement further read, “We’re grateful to our crew members, who are consistently dedicated to the safety and care of our customers and who handled the circumstances with the utmost skill and professionalism.”
Aggressive Passenger Put in Federal Custody
Due to the passenger’s erratic behaviour, the flight had to make an emergency landing in Kansas. After the flight landed, Rivas was put under federal custody. He has been charged with “assaulting and intimidating a flight attendant and thereby interfering in the performance of the flight attendant’s duties.”
