A UP-based government official, who allegedly failed to recognize Union Minister Smriti Irani over phone is now facing probe for “not discharging his duties”. The man who faces probe is a lekhpal. For the unversed, a lekhpal is a clerical post in Uttar Pradesh whose main job is to maintain village revenue account and land records.

The development comes after 27-year-old Karunesh filed a complaint with the authorities. In the complaint, Karunesh alleged that due to non-verification of documents, his mother did not receive pension. Further, when Smriti Irani, Union Minister of Woman and Child Development, called the man, he failed to recognize her.

Eventually, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) took the phone from Smriti Irani and asked the lekhpal to meet him in his office. According to CDO Anukr Lathar, who cited the complainant Karunesh’s letter, there was a laxity on the part of the lekhpal identified as Deepak. The CDO further said that the sub-divisional magistrate Musafirkhana has been directed to probe the matter, following which appropriate action will be taken.

While the jury is still out for the UP clerk, earlier another Kanpur-based clerk made buzz for writing a brutally honest application to take leave. “Patni ko mayke se livakar laane ke liye avkash prarthana patr ke sambhandh me”, the subject line of letter read.

The Facts of the Matter

For the assistance unprivileged, impoverished, sickly, and elderly, the Indian governments have myriad of policies and schemes. However, due to bureaucracy and corruption, the delivery of such services continue to remain in a questionable condition.

Recently, a man in Uttar Pradesh complained that his mother did not receive her pension. The man complained that the Amethi lekhpal, who failed to recognize Union Minister Smriti Irani on phone, was responsible for her mother not receiving the pension.

The complainant in the matter is 27-year-old Karunesh.

Lekhpal Fails to Verify Documents

According a Press Trust of India report, the matter is regarding Karunesh’s complaint. A resident of Pahalwan village under Musafirkhana tehsil, Karunesh alleged that lekhpal Deepak failed to verify the complaint letter sent to Smriti Irani regarding the pension of his mother following his father’s demise.

Smriti Irani Calls Lekhpal, He Fails to Recognize

The complainant alleged that because of the failure in verification of document, his mother did not receive her pension. Further, he alleged that when Smriti Irani, the Union Minister of Women and Child Development called the lekhpal, he failed to recognize her on the call.

As the lekhpal failed to recognize the Union Minister, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Amethi took the phone from Mrs. Irani and asked the lekhpal to meet him in his office regarding the matter. The lekhpal in question was identified as one Deepak.

Amethi Chief Development Officer (CDO) Ankur Lathar told PTI that as per the letter of Karunesh, it was the case of laxity on the part of lekhpal Deepak. As per the complainant’s letter, the lekhpal did not discharge his duties appropriately.

Lekhpal Deepak Faces Probe

As such, lekhpal Deepak is facing probe regarding the matter. The Musafirkhana sub-divisional magistrate has been asked to investigate the matter and appropriate action will be taken following the probe.
