In a huge setback for the Samajwadi Party at the UP Zila Panchayat Polls, BJP secured 66 of 75 seats in a monumental clean sweep. Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party won 5 seats in the total 75 seats while the RLD (Rashtriya Lok Dal) and JSD (Jansatta Dal) took 1 independent win. For BJP’s victory, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hailed the victory as an historic one.

In the Uttar Pradesh Zila Panchayat Polls for the panchayat chief, BJP won 67 seats, Apna Dal secured 1, JSD, RLD and another independent candidate also won one seat each. Samajwadi Party on the other a hand secured 5 wins.

The saffron party aka BJP secured victories in the states including – Ayodhya, Lucknow, Mathura, Prayagraj, Manipuri, Hapur, Auraiya, Barbanki, Kanpur, Kaushambhi, Kushinagar, Siddharthnagar, Raibareli and others. Further, several fortress, where BJP were not anticipated to come out of victorious were also bagged by the saffaron party, including Rampur, Bijnor, Amethi and Shamli.

The Samajwadi Report Card; The Yogi ‘Agni Pareeksha’

If one can compare the same election results to that of 2016, back then Akhilesh Yadav’s party bagged 60 of the 75 contested seats. The Zila Panchayat chief polls can be an interesting parameter as to where the wind will blow in the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for 2022. The election will also be the biggest ‘agni pareeksha’, for CM Yogi Adityanath.

PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah Congratulate CM Yogi Adityanath

After his party’s victory, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and was quoted by reports saying (Hindi translation)-

“The glorious victory of BJP in UP Zila Panchayat elections are blessings of the people for development, public service and rule of law in the state. The credit for this goes to the policies of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and hard work of the workers. Congratulations to the UP government and BJP organisation for this.”

Union Home Minister and BJP affiliated political leader Amit Shah took congratulated CM Yogi Adityanath. In his tweet, Shah wrote (Hindi translation)-

“On the grand victory of BJP in the Uttar Pradesh Panchayat President election, Yogi Adityanath and BJP, Congratulations to you and all the workers. Under the leadership of Modi ji and yogi ji, the BJP government will continue to set new standards of progress by fulfilling the aspirations of the farmers, poor and deprived sections of the state.”

“They have cheated to a majority”: Akhilesh Yadav after BJP’s Majority Win

After the drastic loss, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the state’s administrative authorities and the police were used to make sure that the BJP candidates win. In an Indian Express report, Yadav was quoted saying-

“It is strange…most winning candidates in elections for Zila Panchayat members were from SP, how did BJP win more seats for presidents’ posts? They have cheated to a majority. Administrative officials were also involved in this.”

In his statement, Yadav claimed that BJP had compromised the country’s democratic regulations and have made a “joke” out of the process of fair elections.

“No one has seen such an ugly face of power in the state. To convert their defeats into wins, they kidnapped voters with use of administration and police (officials) and through helpers ensured votes to their candidates. When our leaders and workers opposed this fraud and cheating, they were mistreated and misbehaved with,”

BJP State Vice President Retaliates on Akhilesh Yadav’s Claims

Meanwhile, hitting back on Yadav’s allegations, BJP State Vice president, and Panchayat polls in charge, Vijay Bahadur Pathak said that Yadav should respect the democratic boundaries. Pathak put the BJP victory in relative terms and said that when Samajwadi Party wins in other districts, Yadav calls it democracy. However, he further added-

“When six of his 11 members don’t support him, he calls it murder of democracy… The Election Commission should take cognizance of the SP chief threatening officers openly.”
