As per the House Panel’s recommendations, Donald Trump is likely to be pressed with criminal charges in the US Capital Riot case. The development comes months after the US Capital was trespassed by several Donald Trump supporters who indulged in physical altercation and vandalism. After the incident, the then President Donald Trump was accused of inciting violence, and triggering the protestors to cause a riot at the US Capitol.
Earlier on Monday, the Congressional panel met and voted unanimously to press Donald Trump with as many as four criminal charges. The recommendation was made to the Department of Justice, which would have the final say in whether Trump should be indicted or not.
Congressman Jamie Raskin was quoted saying, “The committee believes that more than sufficient evidence exists for a criminal referral of former President Trump for assisting, or aiding and comforting, those at the Capitol who engaged in a violent attack on the United States.”
Serving as the panel’s vice chair, Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a fellow Republican, went on to say, “No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again. He is unfit for any office.”
The investigation was moved to special counsel after Trump decided to launch for his 2024 campaign.
The Facts of the Matter
If the Department of Justice in US deems it fit, former US President Donald Trump can face up to 20 years of prison. The likelihood of Trump facing imprisonment comes after a committee formed by US House of Representatives said that he incited violence in an event which is now known as the US Capitol Riot. Trump reportedly broke four federal laws, as found by the special committee.
On Tuesday, the committee accused Donald Trump of obstruction of proceeding, defraud the US, inciting an insurrection, and more Federal crimes.

“Sufficient evidence for criminal referral”
Laying down the panel’s findings which were outlined in a 154-page report, Congressman Jamie Raskin said, “The committee believes that more than sufficient evidence exists for a criminal referral of former President Trump for assisting, or aiding and comforting, those at the Capitol who engaged in a violent attack on the United States.”
“The committee has developed significant evidence that President Trump intended to disrupt the peaceful transition of power under our Constitution,” he added.
“Unlawful”: Fellow Republican Liz Cheney
Vice chair and fellow Republican Liz Cheney said that Trump’s inadequate efforts to ask his supporters to end the rioting was “unlawful” and also “utter moral failure and clear dereliction of duty”.
“He is unfit for any office,” Liz Cheney, adding that, “No man who would behave that way at that moment in time can ever serve in any position of authority in our nation again.”

Automatic Grounds for Disqualification
The committee asked the Department of Justice to charge Trump with aiding an insurrection and inciting the same. Jamie Raskin, a Democratic on the other side, said that what Trump did was a “grave Federal offense anchored in the constitution itself” and added that his actions were “automatic grounds” for someone to not hold the state or Federal office.
