A US-based cop has been sacked for shooting at a teen sitting in his car eating a burger. The horrific bodycam footage shows the cop confronting the teen and shooting at the 17-year-old victim. The victim, identified as Erik Cantu, is currently hospitalized, suffering from multiple gunshot injuries. Meanwhile, the cop in question, James Brennand, has been dismissed. The incident occurred on October 2 after a disturbance alert was raised by a fast-food restaurant.
The officer had been with the San Antonio police for seven months and had been on probation, a protocol observed by the San Antonio department where officers graduate from academy within 12 months.
Officer James reportedly thought that the car that teen was sitting, was stolen, and called for a backup. However, before backup arrived, he confronted the teen, and asked the teen to get out. When the teen asked as to why he needed to step out, the officer fired at him.
Following the incident, San Antonio police chief released a statement. “The former Officer’s actions are indefensible and do not align with our training, tactics and procedures. As such, I terminated him. I will withhold further comment as this incident is still under investigation,” the statement read.
The Facts of the Matter
While police action in US against civilians has always remained a subject of debate, another shocking incident of police brutality was reported where a cop shot at an innocent teen sitting in his car, eating a burger.
The incident occurred earlier on October 2 in San Antonio, Texas. The victim of the shooting was identified as 17-year-old Erik Cantu while the officer is identified as James Brennand. Following massive backlash on social media, the officer was suspended from his service
The incident was also captured on the cop’s bodycam, visuals of which are going viral.
What Does the Video Show?
In the vidoe making rounds of social media, officer James can be heard approaching Cantu and asking him to “get out of the car”. The teen is obviously surprised, and keeps his burger down, asking “why”. However, the matter escalates as the officer shoots at least five times at the teen. The 17-year-old closes the door of the car and tries to get away from the scene, while the cop says “shots fired” on his walkie-talkie.

Teen Charged with Aggravated Assault
17-year-old Erik was injured and was hospitalized after the incident. He was initially charged with evading police and aggravated assault. However, in a statement, a prosecutor involved in the matter stated that there was not enough evidence against Erik to have such charges filed against him
The Texas prosecutor also stated that the officer violated training protocol after approaching the vehicle and abruptly opening the car door without waiting for the backup to arrive.
Police Officer Terminated, Was On Probation
It should be noted that officer James was on probation and had been with the police since seven months. He was terminated from service because of his unprovoked actions of shooting the 17-year-old teen.
In a statement, police chief William McManus said, “The former Officer’s actions are indefensible and do not align with our training, tactics and procedures. As such, I terminated him. I will withhold further comment as this incident is still under investigation”.
