In Uttar Pradesh, as many as 18 labourers who were just sleeping on the road were killed as a truck collided with a bus. The accident happened at UP’s Barabanki district where a bus which was parked on the highway rammed by a truck in the Ram Sanehi Ghat on the wee hours of Wednesday. While 18 people died, 19 others are taking treatment after receiving injuries.

The travesty of human life is such that death awaits to jump on it when life expects that the least. One may stay at the safest corner of their home and yet be pulled towards the end by the hands of the grim reaper. In one such incident, several labourers, who were taking a night’s sleep after toiling hard, were killed by a collision.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, 18 labourers were sleeping in front of the bus that they were traveling in. However, their most fatal mistake came in the form of them making the decision of sleeping on the road, just in front of the parked bus. A fast-moving truck didn’t pull brakes and ended up crushing and killing these labourers.

Bus Breaks Down, Passengers Sleep on the Road

According to reports, a bus was hauling several people from Bihar and was returning from Punjab-Haryana where these people worked. On the night of Tuesday, the bus broke down and the driver of the bus told the passengers that it will take some time to repair the bus. This led the passengers of the bus to step out of the bus and they slept right in front of it. This, would later prove to be their last and their most fatal mistake.

Truck Collides with Bus from Behind, Runs over 18 People

As they slept on the highway, a truck with high-speed collided with the bus from behind. This led to the bus being pushed forward and 18 people were crushed to death during this gory accident. After the accident, Satya Narain Sabat, ADG (Lucknow) was quoted saying, “At the district hospital, there are 19 people who are being treated… A total of 18 deaths have been confirmed due to the accident. Our rescue operation is underway.”

About 100 Passengers were Hauled

Another officer involved in the investigation of the accident was cited by reports claiming the double decker bus was carrying some 100 passengers from Haryana’s Hisa and Palwal district to Bihar. Further, it was also confirmed that the accident happened at around 3 AM on Wednesday morning.

PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia

After the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and expressed his condolences while announcing the ex-gratia. ”PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident in Barabanki. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each,” read the tweet shared by the PMO.

Meanwhile, PM Modi himself expressed his condolences and said how he has been in contact with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

President Kovind Expresses Condolences

Indian President Ram Nath Singh too condoled the accident and tweeted, “Deeply pained by the news of the untimely death of many people in a road accident in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. In this hour of grief, I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Ministers to Visit Injured at Hospital

It’s been reported that on instructions of Chief Minister Adityanath, UP ministers Jai Pratap Singh, Mahendra Singh and Ashutosh Tandon will be visiting the hospital where the injured are undergoing their treatment. CM Yogi Adityanath after the accident tweeted saying, “The death of people in a road accident in Ram Sanehi Ghat area of district Barabanki is very sad. My condolences are with the bereaved family.”
