In an ironic turn-of-events caught on video, Uttar Pradesh female teachers fought and hurled abuses at each other in front of students on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a day celebrated in honour of Mahatma Gandhi, a bastion of non-violence. The incident was reported from a government school in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district. Following the incident, the teachers were suspended with immediate effect.

In the now gone viral video, multiple female teachers can be seen locked into altercation, snatching each other’s phones, and further indulging in some pushing and shoving. In one particular visual, one of the teachers can be seen pulling the other teacher’s hair and dragging her around.

The most shocking part of the entire ordeal is that all this transpires in front of young, impressionable students. These young students are fazed at their teachers acting out in an aggressive way.

After the video of the incident went viral, the Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Kalpana Jaiswal suspended all three teachers involved in the matter. The suspended female teachers were – Preeti Nigam (school headmistress), Nahid Hashmi (assistant teacher), and Pushpalata Pandey (paricharika).

Although shocking, it is not the first-time teachers indulged in scuffle in school. Earlier in June, a principal was caught on video brutally thrashing a teacher in front of students for being late.

The Facts of the Matter

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was later given the title ‘Mahatma Gandhi’, was the biggest advocate and practitioner of non-violence. To honour him and his teachings, Indians celebrate ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ on October 2, every year.

However, in an astonishingly ironic turn-of-events, on a day when Indians remember Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings of non-violence, a few teachers in Uttar Pradesh indulged in a scuffle. That too in front of young impressionable students. The incident occurred in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh at a government school.

The teachers’ actions were caught on video, visuals of which are going viral.

What Does the Video Show?

In the now gone viral video, multiple teachers are seen pushing, shoving and abusing each other as the young students watch them like mute spectators. In the video shared on Twitter, two teachers can be seen trying to snatch each other’s phones. A teacher dressed in saree can be seen asking another female staffer to continue taking the video. In the same video, two teachers can be seen pushing each other aggressively, and one of the teachers goes on to look for a broom.

What Caused the Scuffle

According to reports, the incident occurred at a government school where Preeti Nigam was posted as the headmistress while Nahid Hashmi was posted as an assistant teacher along with Pushpalata Pandey, who works as helper.

On October 2, Gandhi Jayanti was being celebrated in the school when an argument broke out between the teachers over hygiene and cleanliness in the school.

After the video of the incident went viral, Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Kalpana Jaiswal took cognizance of the matter. All the three female teachers involved in the incident were suspended on immediate effect and the matter is now under further investigation.

Earlier in June this year, a similar incident was reported from Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a school principal was caught on video thrashing a female teacher with shoes over being absent. The female teacher in the matter alleged that the principal harassed her on a regular basis. Meanwhile, the principal had alleged that it was the female teacher who had raised her hand at him in the first place, prompting him to retaliate.
