In Uttarakhand, an elderly man reportedly lived with a 6-inch-long leech under his nose cavity for as long as a month. After complaints of excruciating pain, the man finally got the uninvited guest removed from his nose, and was discharged without any event. The incident was reported from Hindolakhal in Uttarakhand and the man who suffered due to the antics of the uninvited guest was identified as 55-year-old Ram Lal.

A resident of Tehri Hindolakhal block, Ram Lal had been suffering from excruciating pain in and around his nose for over a month. After multiple consultations with the doctors, Ram Lal grew increasingly concerned as his pain intensified even more. Frustrated with the ordeal, Ram Lal decided to get examined by the ENT doctors at the Srinagar Combined Hospital.

ENT surgeon Dr Digpal Dutt and his team of doctors were shocked to see that an insect had made Ram Lal’s nose its home for over a month. After much struggle, the doctors were able to successfully remove the leech from Ram Lal’s nose.

Doctors speculate that the 6-inch-long leech may have entered Ram Lal’s system after he drank unfiltered water. As nose sees high blood-supply, the leech continued sucking the blood, and increased in size in no time.

The Facts of the Matter

Imagine living with a blood-sucking organism in your body that grows in size the more it consumes your blood. While the prospect may sound something that make anyone shudder in disbelief, this is something 55-year-old Ram Lal lived with. For over a month, Ram Lal’s nose was the house for an uninvited guest – a leech – that had grown in size up to 6 inches.

After weeks of excruciating pain, Ram Lal finally got the leech out of his nose, and took a sigh of relief – both literally and figuratively.

Uninvited Guest Lives in Ram Lal’s Nose

ENT surgeon Dr Digpal Dutt and his team of specialists conducted some tests, and soon, a shocking truth surfaced. Ram Lal’s nose had become a host to a leech. For the unversed, leeches are parasite and predatory worms that attach themselves on a host and continue to suck on the skin till blood comes through. Blood is an exceptional source for leeches, who continue to grow if they are provided a regular supply of bloodstream.

After they discovered the leech, the team of doctors made efforts and successfully removed the parasitic guest. Ram Lal was successfully discharged and he took a sigh of relief after being alieviated of pain.

“Leech grew to 5-6 inches”

Dr Digpal Dutt was quoted in a News 18 report saying, “Since there is a high blood supply in the nose, the leech kept on sucking it and its size grew to around 5 to 6 inches”. He also added that the leech may have been very tiny when it entered Ram Lal’s nose through unfiltered water.

He also added that it was lucky that Dutt got timely intervention, as the leech could’ve grown bigger to enter the trachea, which could’ve led to a life-threatening situation.
