On Saturday, Vani Jairam, the Padma Bhushan recipient and veteran singer of over 10,000 songs, passed away at 78. The singer was found dead at her Chennai residence earlier on Saturday, with a TOI report claiming that she had an injury on her forehead. The veteran singer was living in Chennai’s Haddows Road in Nungambakkam.
An ANI report quoted Vani Jairam’s house help saying, “I rang the bell five times at Vani Jairam’s residence. But she didn’t open the door. Even my husband called her up but she didn’t receive the call. It’s only she who stays at this residence.” ANI on its twitter also shared pictures of forensic officials arriving at the spot for further investigation. As of now, there are no confirmed reports regarding the veteran singer’s cause of death.
The now deceased 78-year-old singer had recently completed 50 years as a professional singer in the Indian industry, with as many as over 10,000 songs under her belt. In her decades long career, she got to collaborate with some legendary composers like RD Burman, MS Viswanathan Ilaiyaraaja, OP Nayyar, Madan Mohan, and more.
She is also the recipient of three Best female Singer National Film Awards and has received multiple state-sponsored awards from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.

It should be noted that the cause of death and circumstances around the singer’s death are still to be uncovered. Meanwhile, a TOI report stated that the 78-year-old singer had signs of injury on her head. ANI also shared pictures of forensic officers reaching at Vani Jairam’s residence to investigate the matter further.

With over 10,000 under her belt, Vani Jairam sang in several Indian languages in a career that spanned over five decades. She recorded songs in different Indian languages like Tamil, Telegu, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Assameese, Bengali, and Hindi.

Further, she also collaborated with industry legends in her career. She sang for legendary music composers, like M. S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman, Shankar–Ganesh, R. D. Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, OP Nayyar, among many. She also sang duets with legends such as Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, and more.
Receiving Accolades and Awards
During her long and illustrious career, she received three National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. Further, she also won multiple Filmfare Awards, and state-sponsored awards from Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, among others.
She also received Padma Bhushan award, the third-highest civilian award given by the Indian Government.
