Sardar Udham – What the Trailer Showed

The trailer – albeit running short of a minute – packs enough intrigue and mystery. The first few seconds shows a person carefully investigating a signature.

Soon, the focus shifts on the passport size image of Vicky Kaushal in his sardar avatar. With a turban on his head and a significant weight that he must have put on, Kaushal seems perfect for the role.

Soon, the viewers get the full understanding of someone putting together a document – which involved cutting & gluing. A glimpse of what seems like a British Empire passport is seen, beneath which, Udham Singh is scrawled in a neat hand writing.

The focus then shifts to a pile of passports, all with different names. This gives a glimpse into the story that viewers will be chronicling the journey Udham Singh took under various aliases.

Born and brought up in Punjab, Udham Singh’s career took him to multiple countries spread across continents. It started with his association with the Ghadar Party in the US. Singh joined the party and made contacts in Italy, Poland, Hong Kong, Germany, etc.

However, the most fascinating aspect of his illustrious life was his successful attempt of assassinating General O’Dywer. In 1934, he went to London to take down the General who was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacare.

It took Singh another 6 years to assassinate O’Dwyer, which gave him the name ‘The Patient Assassin’. After his immediate arrest, he went on a 36-day hunger strike in the jail. On July 31, 1940, he was hanged to death.
