A shocking video of a policeman hitting a speeding motorcyclist with a helmet has gone viral online, sparking outrage and debate. The incident took place on Friday night on the Trujillo-Huanchaco highway in northwest Peru during a police checkpoint crackdown on illegal street racing.

High-Speed Getaway Attempt

The police had set up a checkpoint to stop and question motorcyclists engaged in illegal street racing and stunts on the highway. One motorcyclist, identified as 23-year-old Jhon Verde Reyes, ignored police orders to stop and tried to speed through the checkpoint. A policeman, identified as Erik Avalos Torres, had his helmet in hand while questioning another biker. Seeing the incoming motorcycle, Torres swung his helmet at Reyes in an attempt to stop him.

Multiple Injuries After Helmet Strike

The force of the helmet blow combined with the motorcycle’s high speed sent Reyes and his 18-year-old woman passenger, Pamela Florian Sanchez, flying off the bike. Sanchez lost consciousness after hitting the ground. Torres was also knocked to the ground due to the impact and suffered facial and body injuries. At least three others were seriously injured in the incident.

Reyes will require surgery for facial damage and lost teeth. Sanchez suffered head and spinal injuries. The video of the dramatic and dangerous incident has garnered over 10 million views online since being posted last week.

Backlash Over Police Action

Many social media users expressed outrage over the police officer’s actions, calling it irresponsible and excessive. Hitting a speeding motorcycle head-on with a helmet could have easily proven fatal for the rider, passenger, or the officer himself.

Police checkpoints are meant to stop violators safely to avoid high-speed chases through crowded roads. While the biker was wrong to ignore police orders, swinging a helmet at him to forcibly stop him has raised concerns over proper police training and conduct during such operations.

However, some defended the officer’s spur-of-the-moment decision to stop the biker from speeding into ongoing police activity nearby. They say he prevented the possibility of the biker causing more accidents or injuries at the checkpoint.

The local police department has not yet issued an official statement on whether Officer Torres followed proper procedure and if he will face any disciplinary action for his actions. Meanwhile, the injured motorcyclist may be charged for ignoring police orders and dangerously fleeing a checkpoint once he recovers.

This shocking incident highlights the importance of safe police chases and proper training to de-escalate tense situations during traffic stops. It also serves as a warning to riders to follow police orders at checkpoints, as high-speed escapes can have severe consequences.
