The video of a famous Mumbai bomb detection dog ‘Simba’ given state funeral after his sudden demise has been making the rounds of social media. The reliable canine passed away earlier last week due to illness. After his demise, the bomb detection squad dog was given a state funeral and was cremated with a three-gun salute at the Parel veterinary hospital.

Simba was 9-year-old at the time of his sudden demise. The cream-coloured Labrador was part of the Mumbai police force since 2013 and had trained in explosive detection and had also worked for the VIP and VVIP bandobast. According to police officials, Simba was keeping unwell for the last one and a half months and undergoing a treatment. After his demise, netizens flooded microblogging platform Twitter and mourned his demise.

It should be noted that this is not the only time a four-legged animal was given a traditional heart-felt funeral. Earlier in 2016, Ranthambore National Park’s pride Machli tigress was given a solemn Hindu funeral after she passed away at 19. She was the oldest-surviving tigress in the world before her passing.

The Facts of the Matter

From fetching balls, to detecting bombs, dogs have gone on to become one of the most reliable pets for humans. Thanks to their ability to sniff out extraordinary and alarming from the mundane and normal, dogs have been trained to then be appointed at airports, railway stations, and local police headquarters. Every time an alarming crisis emerges, we see police officers with highly-trained dogs running around in a bid to keep the surrounding safe.

Meet Simba – Part of Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad

Among such dogs, Simba held an unusual place. Appointed with the Mumbai Police, Simba was part of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad. Every time the police got an alert about a random suspicious bag at a crowded place, it was Simba who put his life at risk and tried detecting the exact location of bombs that were planted by miscreants.

According to a TOI report, Simba had joined the Mumbai police force back in 2013. He had earlier trained extensively in explosive detection and had gone on to work for VVIP and VIP bandobast.

Simba Had Been Unwell, Passed Earlier Last week

Unfortunately, earlier last week, the 9-year-old labrador died due to illness. According to a police officer involved in the matter, Simba had been unwell since the last month and a half. On Friday, the brave canine passed away.

After his passing, the Mumbai Police made sure that Simba received a deserving state-funeral for his service to the city and the country. For that reason, he was cremated with a three-gun salute at a Parel based veterinary hospital.

Visuals of high-ranking officials of Mumbai law enforcement paying their respects to the dead canine have been making the rounds of social media. In one such video, Simba can be seen lying peacefully with several garlands placed around his neck as tribute. Meanwhile, police officers can be seen making the arrangements for his last rite.

A Twitter user took to the microblogging platform and wrote, “Simba, the Bomb Detection dog was given the state funeral, and he was cremated with a three-gun salute at the Veterinary hospital in Parel, Mumbai. Thanks for your service, Simba.”

Zanjeer Dog, Who Saved Countless Lives in 1993, Also Buried with State Honours

Back in 2000. A Labrador retriever called Zanjeer also received a funeral with full state honors. Known as the best bomb detector in the squad, he detected 3329 kg of RDX, 600 detonators, 249 hand grenades and over 6,000 ammunition rounds. Back in 1993, Zanjeer helped avert three more bombs in Mumbai which could have claimed thousands of lives.

In November 2000, Zanjeer developed bone cancer and eventually passed away. For his heroics, he also received a funeral full state honors.
