In a video going viral on social media, a Punjab cop was seen shooting an unarmed civilian during a scuffle. The cop in question was suspended after the video went viral on social media and was booked by the police. The incident was reported from Mohali’s Dera Bassi area and occurred earlier on Sunday, June 26. The cop in question was identified as Balwinder Singh.

In the video gone viral, multiple men and women can be seen involved in a free-for-all brawl with Sub Inspector Balwinder Singh. As a man leaps towards the accused cop, and indulges in a fist fight with him, the cop in question opens fire at him with his service revolver.

A loud scream of agony and anguish can be heard coming from the victim as one of the women rushes towards the cop in retaliation. Meanwhile, the victim can be seen limping and shrieking due to pain. The camera also pans towards the road which shows a grim trail of blood coming out of the victim’s thigh.

The victim’s brother told ANI that the cops arrived at the location and started to misbehave with them. They also tried to check the victim’s wife’s bag. The victim also alleged that the accused cop was drunk,

The Facts of the Matter

Every once in a while, we hear reports of police highhandedness and brutality over civilians. Earlier this month, we reported about a cop in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore slapping a Swiggy delivery agent in public view. Similarly, in April 2022, a drunk cop allegedly slapped two blind men and broke their sticks after they asked him for directions to a certain place. The incident was reported in Chennai.

“Khakhi Arrogance” of Punjab Cop

In yet another incident of “khaki arrogance”, a cop in Punjab was recently caught on cam shooting an unarmed civilian on thigh during a scuffle. The accused, sub-inspector Balwinder Singh, was later suspended and was further booked by the police.

The entire ordeal was caught on video, visuals of which, are going viral on social media.

What Does the Video Show?

In the video, a woman can be heard hurling abuses towards a cop, who in turn can be seen slapping her on the face. Chaos continues further as the woman tries to explain her side of the story to the person recording the video. Meanwhile, a man emerges in the frame with unbuttoned shirt. The man charges towards the cops, shouting loudly in Punjabi, and saying “Maar goli (shoot)”.

Matters continue escalating as the man tries to corner the cop and continues shouting “maar goli” at him. Eventually, a scuffle breaks out between the two sides, and the cop finally uses his service weapon and shoots the man in unbuttoned shirt on his thigh.

Injured due to the bullet wound, the man shrieks and shouts in agony and lips across the road, leaving a trail of blood behind him. Meanwhile, the woman who was arguing, can be seen having another altercation with the cop who shot the man.

First Came Suspension, then the FIR

After the incident, Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh was put under suspension and was transferred to the police lines. Further, departmental action was initiated against the three other cops present there.

A day after his suspension, SI Balwinder Singh was booked for opening fire and insulting woman’s modesty. According to Mohali SSP Vivek Sheel Soni, the orders of booking SI Singh came after preliminary investigation done by the Special Investigation Team.
