On Sunday, reports of a woman with gold beads worth Rs 18 lakhs stitched to burqas was nabbed at the Hyderabad Airport. The woman was reportedly arrested by the airport authorities on Sunday when she was at the Shamshabad International Airport, Hyderabad. Reportedly, the woman, a Dubai-resident, concealed the rhodium coated golden beads by stitching them on her burqas. When measured, the total amount of seized gold weighed up to 350 grams. To take further actions against the woman, a case has been registered against her.

Off late, several passengers flying from India to Gulf countries have been caught as illegal smuggling mules. Earlier in March 2021, a woman was caught at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The woman was attempting to fly with 1.6 kilograms of gold in the form of paste which was worth Rs. 74 lakhs.

The Facts of the Matter

In the latest series of arrests made for illegal gold smuggling, the Hyderabad customs authority arrested a Dubai passenger for carrying gold worth Rs. 18 lakhs. The accused passenger had reportedly arrived from Dubai.

Working on a credible tip-off, the custom officers questioned the woman and checked her luggage. During the check, the authorities found that the woman had stitched several golden beads to her burqas to cheat the system and smuggle the gold.

Hyderabad Customs Shares More Details

Taking to Twitter, the Hyderabad Customs shared a video where a person can be seen removing the beads from the burqa. “On 27.02.22, Hyderabad Customs booked a case of smuggling of gold valued Rs.18.18 lakh weighing 350.00 grams against a passenger who arrived from Dubai by Flight No.FZ-439. Pax concealed gold in beads form which were stitched to burqas,” the tweet read.

In a separate image, one can see all the small gold beads carefully packed in three plastic zip bags.

Woman had Coated the Gold Beads with Rhodium

According to reports, the woman passenger had tried to pass off the golden beads as normal stitched beads. However, on further investigation, it was revealed that she had coated the beads with rhodium. The arrest of the woman comes in line with frequent arrests that are being made by the authorities in its pursuit of a complete crackdown of illegal gold smuggling.

Smugglers from Gulf Countries Recently Caught

Earlier on January 21, the custom officials at the Hyderabad airport found gold chains and gold plate worth a whopping Rs. 1.36 crores from a passenger that had arrived from Dubai. The passenger was identified as Nawaz Pasha. Reportedly the airport authorities acted on its suspicion and asked the man to have his baggage checked.

During the checking the authorities found 2.715 kgs of 24-carat gold chains and gold paste, all amounting to Rs. 1.36 crores in total. When the authorities asked him to produce relevant documents regarding the purchase and sale of the gold, he failed to do so. Moreover, he couldn’t provide an appropriate answer as to where he acquired the gold.

Man from UAE Hides Gold Under his Wig

Similarly, earlier on February 19, the Varanasi airport custom officials seized gold worth Rs. 45 lakhs from two passengers. The two passengers had arrived to Varanasi from Abu Dhabi, UAE. One of the passengers tried to hide the gold under his wig. The gold was in the form of a paste and was put in a small pouch kept over a shaved off part of head with a wig on it.
