Concerning reports are emerging from Vidisha where as many as 4 people have died, 19 have been rescued and several are reported being injured after people fell in a well to save a girl. The rescue operations are still on and after the reports of multiple deaths emerged, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister announced Rs. 5 lakhs for the kin of each deceased.

Tragedies, owing to their unpredictable nature, are sometimes random. And there are times, when tragedies strike even when the best intentions of humans are at play. In similar situation, more than 40 people were reported to have fallen into a well when they were out there to rescue a girl who had fallen first in the well.

How did the Vidisha Accident Happen?

The tragedy happened in Vidisha’s Ganjbasoda region. According to ground reports, a girl fell into a well in the region at around 6 PM on July 15. The well is reported to be about 50 feet deep and the water was as deep as 20 feet in it. To rescue the girl, some people tried climbing down and others stood around the well’s parapet wall to assist them.

Unfortunately, the parapet wall could not take the weight of all those people and it crushed, hurling those standing as onlookers into the water. While several of them are still feared to be trapped in the rubble, as many as 19 people have been safely evacuated and the search and rescue operation is on even after midnight and the dawn which followed.

Tractor Engaged in Rescue Skids and Fells into Well

Meanwhile, several reports are citing eyewitnesses who claimed that even a tractor that was engaged in the rescue operation skidded and fell into the well. State’s Minister of Medical Education was quoted by news agency PTI saying that 19 people have been rescued and have been sent to the hospital for treatment. He further added that the water of the well is also being taken out through equipment.

Furthermore, account of the devastating tragedy came after the rescued were interviewed by reporters. 2 of the rescued were quoted claiming that 12 people –including them – were pulled by the villagers who used ropes to rescue them.

CM Shivraj Singh and MP Authority Swings into Action

After the devastating tragedy occurred, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed the senior officers of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) to carry the search and rescue operation. he claimed that the SDRF and NDRF team have been rushed from Bhopal for the relief work.

Rs. 5 Lakh Ex-Gratia Announced for Next of Kin

Further, the CM has been reported to be monitoring the ongoing search and rescue operation in Vidisha. A high-level probe has been directed and victims have been claimed to be given all possible assistance. The Chief Minister of the state also announced ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs for the next of kin of whoever that lost their live in the terrible tragedy. Further, he also announced that Rs. 50,000 compensations will be provided to the injured and their medical treatment will be completely free.
