Fans were outraged after former Indian team skipper Virat Kohli was given out despite ultra edge showing a clear edge on the screen. The DRS debacle had it all – a controversial decision by the umpire, a dubious call taken by the TV umpire, and a Virat Kohli caught on cam fuming in disbelief after being given LBW. The entire ordeal took place on the third day of the India VS Australia, Test 2, being played in Delhi.

Earlier in the first session, Kohli tried to hold the fort, and was looking in fine form, playing at 44. In one of a turning balls of Matthew Kuhnemann, Kohli’s forward defence felt short and the bowler appealed, after which, the on-field umpire gave Kohli LBW out. Kohli appeared to be confident that he was not out, and went straight for the DRS, even indicating that there was an inside edge.

TV umpire Richard Illingworth took a long time and viewed multiple replays from different angles. A front replay suggested that the ball hit the pad and bat first, however, Illingworth assumed that it was pad first, and Kohli was asked to head back to dressing room.

Loud sounds of boos erupted and Kohli himself walked off with a disapproving stride. Later, he was caught on cam expressing his frustration in the dressing room.

Kohli Welcomed on Home Ground with Applause

Earlier in the day, the Rohit-Sharma led unit started the day cautiously with 21 for no wickets. However, it all got from bad to worse when India lost two wickets in quick succession. It was Virat Kohli, who then came to the crease, with a warm welcome of the crowd, applauding him on his home ground.

The former skipper tried to stich partnerships with batters who came and went, and himself looked to be in a fine form. The Controversial Decision

On-field umpire Nitin Menon took a moment to raise his finger, and Kohli instantly took the DRS, indicating that there was an inside edge from the bat. The TV umpire Richard Illingworth then took his fair share of time to come to a decision that was going to be controversial.

The TV umpire first checked the front replay angle, which clearly showed that the ball hit both the pad and bat simultaneously. Another angle showed the ultra-edge detecting a spike when the ball was extremely close to bat.

TV Umpire Invokes Wrath of Kohli Fans

After taking ample time, Illingworth concluded that it was the pad first that the ball hit and then the bat was hit. The ball tracker was also invoked, which showed umpire’s call, and soon the former Indian team skipper was sent packing at a score that could’ve been more had it not been for the debate-worthy decision.
