Disasters Await to Strike as Safety Norms Dismissed in Himachal Pradesh

A 2015 landslide vulnerability report states that majority of the built-up regions in Himachal Pradesh are in the high-risk zone. The state has 12 districts out of which 7 are in the most vulnerable seismic zone 5.

Shimla was planned by the British colonizers for a population between 16,000-20,000. However, it now houses 2,01,500, according to the 2011 census.

Moreover, in 2017, the National Green Tribunal banned more construction in Shimla’s Forest region. The apex body’s decision was bypassed by the state government. In 2019, it was reported that the state government was allowing structures that were initiated without an approved plan.
