Massive landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, have resulted in significant devastation, with the death toll currently at 106 and approximately 98 individuals reported missing. The landslides occurred early on July 30, 2024, primarily affecting areas around Meppadi, Mundakkai Town, and Chooral Mala, triggered by heavy rainfall that has persisted in the region. The first landslide struck at around 1 AM, followed by another at approximately 4 AM, leading to widespread destruction and isolation of communities.

Rescue Operations

Rescue efforts are ongoing, involving multiple agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire services, and the Indian Army. The Kerala government has also requested assistance from the military, and two helicopters from the Air Force are en route to aid in the operations. Control rooms have been established by the state health department to coordinate emergency medical assistance, and several hospitals in the vicinity are prepared to treat the injured.

Impact and Current Situation

The landslides have caused extensive damage, with many homes destroyed and vital infrastructure, such as a bridge connecting Mundakkai to Attamala, washed away. This has severely hampered rescue efforts and left hundreds of families stranded. As of now, the full extent of the damage remains unclear due to ongoing adverse weather conditions, which have complicated rescue operations.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall in the area, raising concerns that further landslides may occur. Local authorities are working diligently to reach those trapped under debris, and additional teams are being mobilized to assist in the rescue efforts.
