In a recent development, Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, has claimed that the Indian government has issued orders requiring the company to take action against specific accounts and posts. Despite disagreeing with these directives, the company has stated that it will comply with the orders and withhold the specified accounts and posts within India.
Disagreement with the Orders, Commitment to Free Speech
In a statement released by X’s Global Government Affairs team, the company expressed its disagreement with the actions mandated by the Indian government. The statement emphasized X’s belief that freedom of expression should extend to the posts and accounts in question.
“The Indian government has issued executive orders requiring X to act on specific accounts and posts, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment,” the post read. “In compliance with the orders, we will withhold these accounts and posts in India alone; however, we disagree with these actions and maintain that freedom of expression should extend to these posts.”

Pending Legal Challenge and User Notification
X’s statement also revealed that the company has a pending writ appeal challenging the Indian government’s blocking orders. Additionally, X has provided the affected users with notice of these actions in accordance with its policies.
“Consistent with our position, a writ appeal challenging the Indian government’s blocking orders remains pending. We have also provided the impacted users with notice of these actions in accordance with our policies,” the statement said.
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
Due to legal restrictions, X is unable to publish the government’s executive orders themselves. However, the company believes that making these orders public is essential for transparency. X argues that the lack of disclosure can lead to a lack of accountability and arbitrary decision-making.
“Due to legal restrictions, we are unable to publish the executive orders, but we believe that making them public is essential for transparency. This lack of disclosure can lead to a lack of accountability and arbitrary decision-making,” the statement read.

Ongoing Disagreements Over Content Moderation and Free Speech
This recent development appears to be the latest in a series of disagreements between social media platforms and the Indian government over issues related to content moderation and free speech. The government has not yet responded to X’s claims regarding the orders to restrict specific accounts and posts.
As the situation unfolds, it remains unclear which specific accounts or posts the government’s orders relate to. The ongoing discourse highlights the complex balance between regulatory oversight and the principles of free speech and transparency in the digital age.
