West Bengal Parents Lock Teachers Up After Teachers Keep Chicken Leg Pieces for Themselves

In West Bengal, parents of students locked teachers up for over four hours after teachers at a school kept the chicken leg-pieces aside from themselves, and only gave neck, stomach and liver to the students. While reports ruckus due to mid-day meal issues in India are a common news, this is the first-time teachers were locked up by parents over chicken leg-pieces.

The incident was reported from Malda district’s Englishbazar area and the teachers who were locked up by the parents were employers of Amriti Primary School. The incident took place earlier on Thursday and prompted the authorities to conduct an investigation around the irregularities that have surfaced in the aftermath.

Parents of children have alleged that teachers often come to school in a “picnic mood’ on the day chicken is served in the mid-day meal, and they keep aside chicken leg pieces for themselves. As many as six teachers were locked in a room for four hours.

“It is unfortunate that teachers are depriving the students of their food supplied by the state government,” a local gram panchayat member said. According to reports, prior to locking the teachers, the parents also had an altercation with them when they raised a complaint regarding the situation.

In what could only be described as a “fowl” play, a school in India’s Malda district has found itself embroiled in a controversy over chicken pieces in mid-day meals.

Parents of students at Amriti Primary School have accused the teachers of keeping the good bits of chicken for themselves and serving the lesser portions to the kids. Things came to a head when the teachers found themselves locked up in a room for over four hours by angry parents, prompting an investigation by the district administration.

Parents Storm School Seeking Answers from Teachers

As per a New Indian Express report, earlier on Thursday, parents of students who study at Amriti Primary School in Malda’s Englishbazar area stormed the school premises with a shocking allegation. The parents allege that the teachers take away all the leg-pieces and other meaty portions of the chicken served in mid-day meals.

Teachers Come to School in “Picnic Mood”: Parents

The parents alleged that teachers come to school in a “picnic mood’ on the day chicken is to be served for the mid-day meal, and they take away the meaty chunks of the chicken. Further, they alleged that they cook the pieces separately in a better-quality rice.

A light was shed on the situation when students used to return home disappointed when they were supposed to get chicken curry, complaining that they were only provided leftover parts.

Altercation Ensues, Parents Lock Teachers for 4 Hours

To raise a complaint, parents stormed the school and soon an altercation ensued between the parents and teachers.

The altercation escalated to a point where parents took six teachers forcibly and put them inside a room, locking it from the outside for the next four hours. It was only when the police intervened that the teachers were freed.

Investigation Asked

Meanwhile, a member of a local gram panchayat was quoted by the New Indian Express report saying, “It is unfortunate that teachers are depriving the students of their food supplied by the state government.” Further, the chairman of the district primary education board has bene asked to conduct an investigation.
