Humble Beginnings

With a net worth of estimated $5 million, the 22-year-old TikTok champion’s beginnings were as relatable as his content is. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the immediate nationwide lockdowns that followed across the planet, Khaby too lost his job and was forced to move back to his parent’s place.

Initial Videos Didn’t Receive Views

To pass some time and not get bogged by the anxiety that lockdowns induced, Khaby created a TikTok account. Like most, Khaby too had no secret sauce of creating content in the beginning, and posted videos of him dancing, playing games, and using the apps filter. The videos never went viral and didn’t receive a lot of views or likes.

Eureka Moment

In November 2020, one of Khaby’s videos went viral, and pushed him into discovering himself. The video was of him demonstrating a simple alternative solution to an overly complicated lifehack. He simply did his hand-gestures he’s now famous for, and shook his head in disapproval, a gesture that many have since parodied and copied.

On Being Silent in Videos

When asked about why he chooses to be silent in his videos, Khaby told Forbes “I think the reason that I am silent speaks louder – it is accessible to more people than if I would make my videos in English. I speak a universal language that everyone understands.”
