In a horrifying incident, a woman aboard the Pushpak express was gangraped by robbers. Further, the robbers also stole property worth Rs. 96,390. The incident happened on Friday evening when the train was headed towards Mumbai from Lucknow. So far, 4 persons have been held in the matter and property worth Rs. Rs 34,200 have also been recovered. The rape survivor is a 20-year-old girl who was threatened with sharp weapons.

According to a recent National Commission for Women report, India witnessed a sharp 46% increase in complaints when it comes to crimes against women in 2021. In the first 8 months of 2021, over half of the 46% complaints in the first eight months came from Uttar Pradesh.

In 2021, the NCW received as many as 19,953 complaints of crimes against women in the first eight months. This number is more from the 13,618 complaints reported in 2020. However, the number is significantly more as COVID-19 pandemic lockdown reduced reporting of crimes.

Recently, another crime was reported – this time in a train. A 20-year-old woman was gangraped in a Mumbai bound train.

The Facts of the Matter

In an incident enough to get blood curdling, 8 men allegedly gang-raped a woman who was onboard the Pushpak Express. The Pushpak Express is a Lucknow to Mumbai train and on October 8, the train was heading to Mumbai when the crime was committed.

Robbers Board Train, Rob People off Gold, Phones

According to reports, 8 persons, all carrying sharp weapons entered the Pushpak Express’ sleeper coach from Igatpuri when the train had stopped 120 km from Mumbai. The goons quickly started to wreak havoc and started to rob the passengers who were on board. The robbers stole gold, mobile phones, and other personal belongings worth Rs. 96,390.

Horror Continues – Robbers Gangrape 20-year-old Girl

This was unfortunately, not the end of the horror. The goons then attacked a woman and gangraped her. When a few passengers came to the 20-year-old survivor’s rescue, they attacked them and injured them in process.

Train Reaches Station, Police Officers Intervene

As the train continued, the survivor was raped for over half an hour. The train slowly crawled its way to Kasara station, Mumbai. This is where the passengers raised an alarm while the robbers were still on the board. The Government Railway Police swung into action after receiving the alarm and soon 2 persons were apprehended.

Victim Fine, 4 Accused Arrested

Quaiser Khalid, the Commissioner of Police, Railways, took to Twitter and shared the details around the incident. “The victim is twenty years old and she has been taken for medical examination by our lady officer. She is fine. We are collecting all evidences. The accused are being questioned by our team. We are checking their previous records.,”

Mr. Khalid further added that the robbers raped the woman when the train was traveling through the ghat area that falls on the way to Mumbai. “(Accused) Started committing the crime through the Ghat area during the night. When the train reached at Kasara under our jurisdiction passengers called out for help. The officer and staff @grpmumbai immediately responded and we have apprehended four accused so far.

The four apprehended men have been slapped with multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code. This includes Section 395 (Punishment for dacoity), Section 397 (Dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt.), Section 376(D)(Punishment for gang rape), Section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and Section 354(B).
