A bizarre theft occurred at an Apple store in Fuzhou, China last week when a woman was caught on CCTV chewing through an iPhone’s security cable in order to steal the device.

The woman, identified by her surname Qiu, entered the Apple store and pretended to browse the display of iPhone 14 models. According to the store manager Wang, Qiu leaned over the counter to examine a $960 iPhone 14 Plus model more closely. She then began chewing through the security cable attaching the device to the display stand.

Brazen Daytime Theft Shocks Many

Qiu managed to bite through the cable completely and slipped the iPhone into her bag. She acted casually throughout the incident, scrolling through the phone’s screen to avoid drawing suspicion. An alarm was triggered, but Qiu left the store before employees noticed the missing device.

Police reviewed security footage showing Qiu gnawing at the cable and were able to apprehend her outside her home 30 minutes after the theft. When questioned, Qiu admitted she planned to steal an iPhone after being unable to afford one.

The brazen daytime theft has shocked many. “She must have very strong teeth to bite through that cable,” one social media user remarked.

Surveillance System Foils Woman’s Plot

While creative, Qiu’s ploy ultimately failed thanks to the store’s surveillance system. She now faces theft charges over the $960 device. Her case serves as a warning that major retailers like Apple are aggressively utilizing technology to catch thieves in the act.
