Woman Gives Birth to Son in Pacific Ocean, Chose to Get No Doctors’ Appointments or Tests, Method Called ‘Free Birthing’

In a strange incident, a woman recently gave birth to her son in Pacific Ocean. To fulfill her aspiration of ‘free birthing’, the woman chose to not get any doctor’s appointments or medical tests. For the unversed, ‘free birthing’ is a practice where mothers give birth to their babies without any medical support or midwifery assistance.

Thanks to medical development over the course of the last century, women receive appropriate medical attention for safe birthing. However, some women choose to ditch all such assistance and give birth the way women had to centuries ago.

Recently, 37-year-old Josy Peukert, has been making buzz for being one such woman. The 37-year-old woman recently shared videos from her delivery day from the shoreline of Nicaragua. In her interview to Daily Mail, the new mother said, “I got this idea in my head I wanted to give birth in the ocean and because the conditions were right on the day that’s what I did. For weeks, I monitored the tide and so when the time was right for me to give birth I knew the beach would be safe for us.”

The video shows to-be-mom going through contractions and seemingly in pain. The video has been viewed over 2,00,000 times so far and is clocking thousands of views every hour.

According to a Slate report, over 600 women in 1,00,000 births died during childbirth in the 1900s. The death rate was twice that in the 1600s and 1700s. Some estimates further stated that 1 to 1.5% of women in that day and age died during child birth.

Thanks to medical advancements, maternal mortality rate has reduced. However, recently a woman went against all the medical advancements and decided to go for ‘free birthing’, a process where a mother chooses to not get any medical assistance or midwifery support to give birth.

The new mother, Josy Peuker, is making a splash online by sharing the video of her giving birth to her son in the Pacific Ocean. While the video was shared back in February, its now that it’s going trending on all news publications.

27-year-old Josy Peuker in an interview said that she wanted to go for a ‘free birth’, to set an example that women can freely give birth on their own. “I got this idea in my head I wanted to give birth in the ocean. For weeks I monitored the tide, and so when the time was right for me to give birth I knew the beach would be safe for us.”et an example that women can freely give birth on their own.

“Because the conditions were right on the day — that’s what I did,” the 27-year-old mother, who came from Germany to Nicaragua to give birth to her son. Her actions has divided netizens with one side lauding her for being ‘empowering’ and other side criticizing her for ‘endangering’ the life of her son.

What Does the Video Show?

In an Instagram video, that’s been viewed over two-lakh times, Josy can be seen visibly in pain kneeling in the surf. With waves crashing around her, she undergoes the painful contractions. The video then cuts to the moments after delivery, where Josy can be seen holding her newborn with the umbilical cord attached.
