In a concerning development, Delhi Women’s Commission chief Swati Maliwal alleged being molested by a drunk driver and being dragged by the accused’s car near the AIIMS Hospital situated in the national capital. The accusation comes just weeks after Anjali Singh, a Delhi-based woman was killed in a gruesome accident where she was dragged by a car for several kilometers on New Year’s Eve.

Making a reference to the gruesome incident, the DCW chief Swati Maliwal said that she could’ve suffered the same fate as Anjali had it not been for her luck. “I was inspecting how safe Delhi is for women during night,” Maliwal said, as quoted by India Today.

“The person driving a white Baleno was drunk, passed lewd comments and made objectionable gestures. When I tried to catch him, he closed the glass of the driver’s seat and my hand got stuck in it. I was dragged for several metres. I was lucky else I would have met a fate similar to Anjali’s,” she was further quoted saying.

Meanwhile, the accused has been identified as Harish Chandra, a resident of Sangam Vihar. He has been arrested on charges of molestation and voluntarily causing hurt. As per reports, Maliwal’s hand got stuck in the accused’s window, and he dragged her for 10-15 meters.

The Facts of the Matter

A month has not passed away since the gruesome accident of Anjali Singh which shocked the nation and a similar incident has been reported from the national capital. This time, the victim of the incident is none other than the city’s women’s commission chief, Swatli Maliwal. Maliwal alleged that she was molested by a drunk man, and was dragged in a car.

Earlier on Thursday, Maliwal took to Twitter, and gave an account of the incident she was subjected to.

“If chairperson not safe..”

“Late last night I was inspecting the situation of women’s security in Delhi. A driver of a car molested me in a drunken state and when I caught hold of him, he locked my hand in the mirror of the car and dragged me.”

“God saved my life. If the Chairperson of the Women’s Commission is not safe in Delhi, then imagine the situation,” her tweet further read.

Accused Arrested, was in Drunk State

Following the arrest, the accused, identified as 47-year-old Harish Chandra, was arrested on charges of causing hurt and molestation. The cops received a PCR call sometime around 3.11 am by patrolling vehicle that saw the entire ordeal.

As per DCP (South) Chandan Chowdhary, the accused was drunk and stopped near Maliwal, and asked her to sit inside with bad intention. When Maliwal refused, the accused drove near her again, and asked her to get in the car.

DCW Chief’s Hand Got Stuck in Car

When Maliwal tried to reprimanded the accused, he rolled the window of the car. This was when Maliwal’s hand got stuck and the accused drove the car, dragging her for 10-15 meters.

The accused has since been arrested after an FIR was registered against him under Section 341 (restraint), 354 (criminal force to woman to outrage modesty), 509 (molestation), along with others.

The Horrific Anjali Singh Accident

Earlier on January 1, Anjali Singh, an event management company employee, was driving a two-wheeler with her friend Nidhi when a Baleno struck her and dragged her for as much as 12 km. Her completely mutilated corpse was found later by an eyewitness. So far, accused, identified as Amit, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj, have been booked for murder.
