In a horrific incident reported from Jharkhand, yet another woman was set ablaze by her stalker for “rejecting marriage proposal”. The incident comes barely a month after a class 12 girl was set to fire by her stalker earlier on August 28. Like the August incident, this incident too was reported from Jharkhand’s Dumka district. Following the incident, the accused was arrested.
According to reports, the 22-year-old victim in the matter is currently battling for life after the accused stormed into her home and poured petrol on her. The jilted stalker took the horrific step against the victim after she refused to marry him.
As per sub-divisional police officer Shivendra Prasad, the accused, identified as Rajesh Raut, was forcing the victim to marry him, despite being married himself. When the victim and her family refused the accused’s proposal, it enraged him further.
Reportedly, the accused also threatened the victim, and had said, “If you do not marry, I will burn you to death like the Dumka petrol scandal,” as per an India Today report.
The incident comes months after a 19-year-old girl was set ablaze by a man for turning down his proposal. Amid the public outrage, another half-burnt body of a woman was found in the district, days after the first incident.

Amid the political turmoil, the state of Jharkhand is witnessing a human tragedy, one which is not getting its time in the light. It is the tragedy of crimes against women. While the political turmoil in the state turned heads and was responsible for the state to be amid news channels, its recent spate of crimes against women needs more attention.

Victim Battling for her Life
Recently, a woman in Jharkhand was set ablaze by her stalker for rejecting his marriage proposal. The incident occurred earlier on Friday in the Bhalki village in Dumka’s n Jarmundi area. The victim in the incident is a 22-year-old woman and the accused in the matter was arrested hours after the incident. The victim is currently battling for her life.
Accused was a Married Man, Proposed Victim
The accused, identified as Rajesh Raut, knew the victim since 2019 and had been stalking her ever since. Raut, an already married man, had proposed the victim earlier in February to get married, which the latter refused.
The accused continued insisting the victim to accept his proposal. He even threatened the victim that she would meet the fate of the class 12 student, who was set ablaze earlier in August 23 when she was asleep at her home.

The Day of the Crime
Earlier on Friday morning, the accused stormed into the victim’s home, poured petrol on her when she was sleeping, and set her ablaze. The victim was rushed to the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital, and was later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences.

Recent Spate of Crimes Against Women in Dumka, Jharkhand
The horrific incident comes after a class 12 girl was set ablaze by her stalker for rejecting his proposal in August much like the most recent crime against the woman, the incident with the class 12 victim too transpired in Jharkhand’s Dumka district.
The accused identified as Shahrukh, had poured petrol on the victim when she was asleep and set her ablaze. She was rushed to the PhuloJhano Medical College and Hospital with 90%. She was later referred to the RIMS, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Days after the incident, another half-burnt body of a woman was discovered in Dumka district. This time, the body was burnt beyond recognition, and its identity was not established immediately. The matter was taken up by the authorities for investigation.
