The Kashmir Files Effect
The Kashmir Files was earlier released on March 11. The film showcased the J&K Kashmiri Pandit exodus from the valley that transpired in the 1990s. Starring Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi, the film was polarizing on several facets. While some historians and critics panned the film for historical inaccuracies, it received appreciation from various Hindu factions, and even Indian Prime Minister and Home Minister.
The 1984 Sikh Killings
1984 is one of the darkest years in the Indian history, which if written in history books, will be written in the crimson of the blood. In June 1984, the then Prime Minister of country Indira Gandhi, authorized removal of Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the Golden Temple. Official estimates reported over 5,000 civilians killed during the operation.
The incident, often known as ‘Operation Blue Star’ was followed by the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was gunned down by her Sikh bodyguards.
This triggered mass killings of Sikhs across the country, primarily in India’s capital New Delhi. Mobs killed Sikhs housed in cars, trains, or their own residences. Witness accounts tell about mobs vandalising Sikh establishments, gang-raping Sikh women, and pilaging anything and everything associated to Sikhs.
