On 14th April, Danish politician Rasmus Paludan who leads Stram Kurs party, allegedly burned a copy of Quran (Islam’s most sacred text) in a densely Muslim populated area, Linkoping, Sweden under police protection. As a result, violent riots broke down on Friday where nine police officers were injured in the city of Orebro, central Sweden.

AFP reported on Monday that according to police s statement, three rioters were hit by ricochets who now need immediate medical attention. Moreover, eight people were arrested in Norrkoping while 18 others were detained in Linkoping, making a total of 26 protesters.

The Facts of the Matter

Any kind of harm which involves one’s religion is considered to be the most degraded kind.  Danish Hard Line party leader Rasmus Paludan, chose to burn Quran which he ultimately resulted in aggressive reaction from Muslims all over. After the incident, protests have fetched a lot of media attention and the Hard Line party leader’s actions have hurt the sentiments of Muslims worldwide.

The Outrageous Violence

Throughout the weekend Sweden witnessed the violence where an estimated number of 150 people protested against the burning of one of the Islam’s central texts, by throwing stones, setting cars and tyres on fire, and set up a barrier fence to halt the traffic.

Most of the people who participated in the protests were reportedly Muslims. They broke through police barricade and said to have set fire on four police vehicles and more than 20 vehicles were destroyed. According to Swedish police officer, 26 police officers along with 14 civilians had been affected by minor injuries.

Impact on Muslims worldwide

Iraq, after this incident, demanded for an immediate action from the Swedish government to end any ugly step taken against Quran. A letter posted by Iran to Swedish diplomat said, “defiling of the sanctities of more than two billion Muslims of the world and hurting their feelings as the worst form of abusing freedom of speech”.

Paludan and his prior actions

Rasmu Paludan, a 40-year-old Danish politician and lawyer, is the leader of far-right political party Hard Line, which he founded in 2017.On the year 2000, he was arrested in France for similar reason- burning of Quran in 2019. After this act of his, reports claimed that he is moving across Sweden in search for more densely Muslim areas to trigger their sentiments.
