In a major boost to the already inspiring and empowering ‘Make in India’ initiative, Apple has started the manufacturing of iPhone 13 at a Chennai plant. The iPhones will be manufactured at Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur in Chennai.

The company recently issued a statement regarding the development which read – “We are excited to begin making iPhone 13 — with its beautiful design, advanced camera systems for stunning photos and videos, and the incredible performance of the A15 Bionic chip — right here in India for our local customers”.

However, if your hands are itching to grab the latest and greatest of Apple at a cheaper price, we must inform you that the company is not likely to do drop the prices of the smartphone, as per an India Today report.

It should be noted that Apple already manufactures its older iPhone models through its partners Foxconn and Winstron, but it’s the first time the iPhone 13 will be manufactured at the Chennai-based facility. It must also be noted that news comes six months after the company announced its manufacturing plans.

The Facts of the Matter

In December 2021, Apple announced that the company will begin manufacturing its flagship iPhone 13 in India, giving a major push to the already getting stronger Make in India initiative. The decision was made owing to iPhone 13’s massive success in India. According to Mac rumours, iPhone 13 proved the most popular Apple smartphone in India, selling more than the older models, and the much more expensive iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.

News Comes Just Six Months After the Plan Was Announced

Come six months later, Apple announced that it is all set to begin manufacturing iPhone 13 at its partner Foxconn’s Chennai based manufacturing plant. On April 11, news media outlets reported Apple issuing a statement regarding the matter which read – “We are excited to begin making iPhone 13 — with its beautiful design, advanced camera systems for stunning photos and videos, and the incredible performance of the A15 Bionic chip — right here in India for our local customers”.

In its statement, the consumer tech giant also stated that its supplier sites across India utilize solar energy and wind energy for its operations. “All established iPhone final assembly supplier sites in India do not generate any waste sent to landfill and are UL Zero Waste certified,” the statement further read.

Apple’s Manufacturing History on Indian Soil

It should be noted that iPhone 13 is not the first smartphone that will be manufacture in India. Apple initiated its manufacturing partnership with India back in 2017 with the iPhone SE, a smartphone aimed for budget-conscious consumers who would still like to flaunt an Apple device. Since then, it has manufactured all the subsequent phones including the iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and as per the latest reports, iPhone 13.

How has Apple Fared So Far in India

According to a Bloomberg report, iPhone reported an increase in sales in the last quarter of 2021 and its sales grew to 2.3 million unites. This was a sharp 34% growth over year as per the report. Riding on the success of iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, the company also posed a record-breaking revenue of over $123 billion for 2021 Quarter 1. In a market getting increasingly crowded with the likes of Xiaomi, OnePlus and Samsung, Apple has created more than a niche for itself.
