On Tuesday, February 15, Bollywood’s disco-king Bappi Lahiri passed away at 69. After the news of his demise broke, twitter was flooded with tribute messages. Prominent netizens from the world of music expressed their shock and grief on the microblogging platform. Bappi Lahiri was reportedly admitted to CritiCare Hospital in Juhu and took his last breath in the hospital.

After being struck with COVID-19 last year, he was in and out of hospital for various ailments. At his Juhu residence a lift with a wheelchair was also installed which provided him an ease in terms of mobility. Lahiri was fondly known as Bappi Da in the music industry.

Known for his synthesized music compositions, Lahiri composed songs that had western orchestration and Indian music fused. Some of his most popular compositions include ‘Jimmy Jimmy’, ‘I Am A Disco Dancer’, ‘Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re’, and more.

The Facts of the Matter

Singer and composer Bappi Lahiri died earlier on Tuesday night at the age of 69. Reportedly, Lahiri died due to a medical condition called sleep apnea, a potentially fatal disorder where breathing abruptly stops and starts. He was admitted to the CritiCare hospital since a month and was being treated for other issues other than sleep apnea.

Bappi Lahiri’s Family Issue Statement

After his demise, his family released a statement which read, “It’s a deeply sad moment for us. Our beloved Bappi Da has left for heavenly abode last midnight. The cremation will take on arrival of Bappa From LA tomorrow mid-morning. We are seeking love and blessings for his soul.”

CritiCare Hospital’s director Dr. Deepak Namjoshi told Press Trust of India that Mr. Lahiri was in the hospital for over a month and was discharged earlier on Monday. However, the very next day his health deteriorated and a doctor was called by the family.

Bappi Da Was Hospitalized On Several Occasions For 1 Year

Mr. Lahiri was rushed to the hospital again. Before midnight, Mr. Lahiri passed away due to the OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). Dr. Namjoshi further added that Mr. Lahiri was suffering with OSA since last one year. For the treatment of the same, he was admitted to the hospital on multiple occasions and recovered on all occasions.

Twitter Flooded with Condolence Messages

After his demise, the Indian entertainment fraternity, and prominent influential netizens took to Twitter and condoled the death. This included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Academy Award Winning composer A.R. Rahman, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, and more.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote, “Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji’s music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions. People across generations could relate to his works. His lively nature will be missed by everyone. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Sharing a link of a news article that confirmed Bappi Lahiri’s demise, composer-singer A.R. Rahman wrote, “Bappi Lahiri, the Disco King of Hindi cinema!”

Life and Times of Bappi Lahiri (1952-2022)

‘Bappi Da’, ‘Disco King’, ‘Golden Man’, these are a few of the names that singer-composer Bappi Lahiri was known by in the Indian music industry. At a time when most artists chose to not express themselves through their style, Bappi Lahiri set himself apart by his trademark gold chains and swanky sunglasses.

Born to a mother and father who were both musicians in their own right, Bappi Lahiri was also related to Bollywood’s greatest find – Kishore Kumar. Thanks to all the nurturing, Lahiri started composing music when he was just 19 years old.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Lahiri emerged as one of the most influential and adored music composers. Known for creating hum-worthy tunes, he is behind songs like “Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja”, “Yaad Aa Raha Hain”, “Koi Yaha Naache Naache”, and more.

His compositions from Mithun Chakraborty starrer Disco Dancer made him a household name in India.
