In a thrilling moment caught on cam, recently a real-world Baloo stood up to Sher Khan, visuals of which were shared by an IFS officer on Twitter. For the unversed, Baloo and Sher Khan are two beloved characters from Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, a book that spawned an animated series, several movies and comics.
In the movie and the animated series Mowgli’s ally Baloo confronts Mowgli’s arch-nemesis Sher Khan. Life imitated fiction as the video on Twitter shows a black bear literally standing up to its hind legs to assert dominance over a tiger waiting to pounce on the bear.
The video was shared on Twitter by IFS officer Saket Badola who captioned the video as, “Greetings, of a slightly different kind.” So far, the video has garnered over thirty thousand views and has amassed several comments by netizens. Some netizens are cheering for the black bear for its bravery while other are lauding the tiger for not launching into an attack.
The Facts of the Matter
Since time immemorial, humans have often wondered who would win among a tiger and a bear when the two beasts decided to lock their figurative horns. If we play by numbers a grizzly bear are 6-8ft in length and have a bite force of 1200 psi.
Meanwhile, tigers range in length between 8-12 ft and can have a bite force of 1,050 psi. While tigers are faster and can maneuver more easily than bear, bears can land a spine-breaking blow on tiger.
So one would assume that the two titans can give each other an extremely tough fight and neither of the two can be discounted. Recently, a video shared by an IFS officer on Twitter gave a glimpse on what would happen when a bear decides to confront a tiger.

What Does the Video Show?
In the video gone viral, a tiger can be seen crouching on a mud road while a bear heads towards the tiger directly. On seeing the tiger, the bear’s fight or flight response kicks in.
Instead of avoiding the path or fleeing the tiger, the bear decides to confront the big cat. The bear suddenly jumps and stands up on its hind legs. It should be noted that bear behaviour specialists have claimed that bears stand on their hind legs to ascertain about what is in front of them. The action is part curiosity part aggression.
Meanwhile, the tiger stays crouched and remains undeterred. The clip ends with the tiger standing its ground and the bear deciding to turn away and move.

Earlier in 2021, another fascinating clip showed a bear standing up to a sneaky tiger and then turning table on the big cat. The incident occurred about three years before being shared on Twitter. The video was shared by IFS Officer Susanta Nanda.
In the viral video, a tiger can be seen sneaking up on a sloth bear. The bear, unaware of what is to befall it in a few seconds, continues on its pursuit of searching for food. Soon, the big cat lunges onto the bear and tries to attack the bear with its paws.
Much to the surprise of netizens, the bear decided to fight back and ended up chasing the big cat with fury and aggression.
Bear takes the prank seriously.
