In a robbery caught on cam, a Mumbai SBI employee was shot in a robbery. Robbers reportedly looted Rs. 2.5 lakhs by putting the SBI staffer on gunpoint. The incident was reported from the Dahisar branch of the bank in the financial capital of Maharashtra. Reportedly, two unidentified robbers barged into the premises and tried snatching a bag full of cash from the SBI staffer. When the staffer resisted, the robbers shot him in the chest. They also took the cash bag and fled the scene. One more person was injured in the SBI Mumbai robbery. A day after the incident, two persons were arrested by the police, which also included a minor.

Background

According to Reserve Bank of India data, from the period of 2015 to June 2018, every day three banks were looted every day. Moreover, in this period, Rs. 168.72 crores were robbed from several banks.

Off all the cases involving robbery, burglary and theft, almost 10% were reported from Bihar. Bihar was followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal with 9% each.

Another interesting statistic that emerged was the about most amount of money burgled. Rs. 87.21 crores, which was the 51% of the total amount, was stolen from banks across Maharashtra, Karnataka, UP, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Recently a robbery was carried at the Dahisar’s branch of the State Bank of India which resulted in one casualty and one injury.

The Facts of the Matter

2 masked robbers shook the SBI branch in Mumbai’s Dahisar branch on Wednesday after they shot a staffer and robbed Rs. 2.5 lakhs. Reportedly, the robbers were conscious about the level of the security the bank would have as the incident took place a few minutes before the closing time of the bank.

The robbers chose to break in and carry out the robbery at a time when no security guards were on duty. Moreover, customers were also not taking to the bank as the bank’s shutter was half closed.

One SBI staffer was shot during the successful robbery attempt and later succumbed to his wounds. Incidentally, the shocking robbery was caught on the CCTV cameras set up inside the premises of the bank.

What does The Video Show?

The 1 minute 27 second video showed the horrific crime being committed in real time. The visuals show two unsuspecting women winding up their day’s work as two masked men come barging in with their guns pointed at them.

The two robbers then move around the branch collecting cash and ultimately take cash from the counter of one female staffer. After taking the cash, the robbers rush out.

After the incident, Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police Pravind Padwal was quoted in an India report saying, “One SBI contract employee died after being shot by two unidentified persons at bank’s Dahisar branch. One of them opened fire at the employee.”

How SBI Staffer Came In Line of Fire?

The deceased staffer was identified as Sandesh Gomare. Mr. Gomare was the first to approach the robbers without suspicion. But before he could save himself from the incoming tragedy, he was on the receiving end of a round of gun.

As he was on a close range, he was hit in a chest and collapsed at the spot. According to a Mid-Day report, Mr. Gomare was rushed to the hospital after the incident but was declared dead on arrival.

2 Accused Arrested, One was Minor

A day after the incident, the two accused were arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch. Reportedly, the two men were arrested thanks to the efforts of a dog squad that led the police officers to a dairy located in Daisar. It should be noted that one of the accused is a 16-year-old minor.
