In a shocking incident caught on cam, a youth recently climbed a train’s engine to kill himself. However, thanks to the Railway staff’s prompt action, the youth was saved and a tragedy was averted. The video of the entire rescue operation was shared on Twitter by Ministry of Railways. Reportedly the incident occurred at the Danapur railway station, Bihar.

In the hair-raising video, a railway employee can be seen crawling up to the train’s engine and passing a shawl at the youth. The railway employee somehow manages to not get in contact with a high-voltage electric wire, and pulls the youth from the engine’s roof. The man was then covered by the towel as he fell on the platform and was later rushed to the hospital.

The railway staffer who promptly intervened and averted the tragedy was reportedly the ticket checker. After the video was shared online, netizens across the nation applauded the ticket checker’s actions that ended up saving the youth’s life.

Background

According to the Railway Board data from 2020, as many as 8,700 people, many of whom were reportedly migrant workers, died on the Indian Railway tracks in 2020. A year where COVID-19 had induced havoc in the country, and ironically, a year where passenger trains were relatively curtailed due to the an over two-month long lockdown.

The figures compiled from different state governments state that as many as 56,271 persons were reported dead in a similar fashion between 2016 and 2019. In 2016, 14,032 persons died in railway related accidents while in 2017, 2018 and 2019, 12,838, 14,197, and 15,204 persons died respectively.

Meanwhile, the train tracks at a Bihar station could’ve reported another death had it not been the prompt action of a railway staffer.

The Facts of the Matter

A ticket-checker at Bihar’s Danapur railway station turned into the hero of the day when he rescued a young man who had climbed the roof of a train engine to kill himself. While it was not revealed as to what the youth’s plan was, many bulletins have speculated that the young man wanted to touch the high-voltage wire to take his life.

The ticket checker’s heroic rescue was caught on cam and was later shared on Twitter by the Indian Railways itself.

What Does the Video Show?

The merely 29 second chilling video shows a railway staffer running towards a train and trying to crawl his way up to the engine. The man then throws a shawl around the man to make sure he doesn’t slip away from him and fall on the tracks. The staffer then pulls the youth with all his might and safely brings him down. The youth who was up on the engine compartment roof can be seen lying on the platform unconscious.

The video shared by the Indian Railways has been viewed over forty thousand times on Twitter with many netizens applauding the railway staffer’s bravery. Many netizens also wrote in favour of the railway staffer getting an award from the government.
