The Washermenpet police arrested a 25-year-old man who reportedly stole laptops from medical colleges to take revenge on his ex-girlfriend who dumped him. The accused is identified as K Tamiz Selvan, and is an economics graduate. The police seized as many as 31 laptops from the accused worth over Rs. 1 crore.
Investigators involved in the case are suspecting that the accused may have stolen over 100 laptops from colleges across Kerala, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, and Jaipur. The accused was nabbed on Saturday after he stole two more laptops at the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital men’s hostel.
The accused stole the laptops from a room that is being shared by two students identified as Ruthesh and Akshay. After Ruthesh filed a complaint at the police station, a case was immediately filed and the police checked the CCTV visuals from around the crime scene.
Through the evidences, the police were able to track down the accused and arrested him on Saturday. After the arrest, the police inspector involved in the case reported that the accused had started stealing laptops after his girlfriend broke up with him.

And to exact a revenge of sorts, he went on a long theft-spree, stealing several laptops from medical colleges, across the country.

How the Case Came Into Light
The case was brought to the light recently when two students from the boy’s hostel of Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital, Chennai, took to the police and complained that their laptops were stolen. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case against the unidentified accused and started investigating.
Accused’s Location Traced by Police
Based on the CCTV footages, the police were able to trace the accused. Initially the police suspected that the accused was a student. However, later it was revealed that the accused had a fake identity card using which he stole the two laptops.
After the arrest, the police interrogated the accused. This was when K Tamiz Selvan revealed that he became an orphan at an early age and moved from Tiruvarur to Chennai. The accused also revealed that he completed his BA in economics from a Delhi-based university.
Meeting Medico Girl in Delhi, Being Dumped
During his time in Delhi, the accused met a medical college student, who reportedly ditched him after she came to know about her past. After being dumped he started targeting colleges and committed his first theft in 2018 in Gujarat.

Committing Theft Crimes Across India
Over the course of the last couple of years, he targeted colleges in Kerala, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and more. The police also seized as many as 31 laptops amounting to over Rs. 1 crore.
“Misguided from a young age”: Police
An Indian Express quoted a police officer involved in the matter saying “He says that he started stealing laptops from medical college hostels after his girlfriend broke up with him but we believe that it cannot be the only reason. He had pending cases against him, he had this habit of stealing from a very young age. Having lost both parents, he was misguided from a young age.”
