A massive fire broke out on Wednesday evening at a paying guest facility for women in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area. According to the Delhi Fire Service, the blaze started around 7:45pm at Signature Apartment located on a narrow lane, and over 20 fire trucks were dispatched to the location to control the fire.

Fire Brought Under Control

The Delhi Fire Services has reported that the fire has been completely extinguished. Around 35 girls were present in the building and fortunately all have been safely evacuated. Preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze started from a meter board installed near the staircase, and then spread upwards to the upper floors. The building, which has ground plus 3 floors, only had a single staircase.

Several Women Feared Trapped Inside Burning Building

Visuals from the site showed thick smoke and flames coming out from the ground floor of the multi-storey building. Mukherjee Nagar is a hub for paying guest accommodations and coaching centers near Delhi University.

While the exact number is unconfirmed, reports indicate that several women residents are feared trapped inside the burning building. Fire department officials stated that efforts are underway to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Authorities have cordoned off the area around the building.
