On Friday, the much-anticipated trailer for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film was revealed to a tremendous response. Alia Bhatt’s portrayal as Kamathipura’s Gangubai steals the show, the 28-year-old actress succeeded to amaze fans. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia are working together for the first time.
The outfits and background music add to the trailer’s appeal by depicting that era with classic cars. However it doesn’t disclose the core plot, Alia as Gangubai in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film is clearly a dominant matriarch.

Alia Bhatt returns as Gangubai Kathiawadi once a timid girl is thrown into prostitution, who fights against her circumstances and emerges as the matriarch of Kamathipura in the 1960s.
Gangubai, portrayed by Alia Bhatt, is gutsy and powerful, despite the difficulties she encounters on her path. Her journey from Kamathipura’s levels to the leader of a brothel and a political leader in the area is portrayed in the movie. Her fight for prostitution workers’ and their families’ rights is a testament to her courage.

The classic drama is modeled on a chapter from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by prominent author Hussain Zaidi. Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada are presenting the film (Pen Studios). On February 16, Gangubai Kathiawadi will have its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, and on February 25, it will be screened in Indian theaters.

As per the trailer voiceover, “Nights in Kamathipura are forever moonlit as Gangubai resides there!”. The trailer then cuts to Alia Bhatt waking up and stepping out of a car, surrounded by screams of ‘Shame on Gangubai’. The teaser then cuts to Bhatt standing right on a stage, giving her speech, which she eventually tears apart. “You might find my remarks a little objectionable, but listen attentively,” she adds as she reaches Kamathipura (Mumbai’s red-light zone). To be honest, we (sex workers) are more dignified than you.”

Alia took to social media to share an unseen shot from Ganguabai Kathiawadi and conveyed her gratitude at the overwhelming response for the trailer. “Chand Pe Chaar Chand Laga Diya Aapke Pyaar Ne,” Alia remarked in a tweet, echoing Gangubai’s emotions.
